I know this is a counter factual, by i am curious of the hypothetical scenario
If they had unions, 70% of us wouldn't have been employed in tech in the first place. So I guess fewer layoffs sure
Dm
No, one thing the union cannot do is prevent layoffs. They can help negotiate terms or deals or temporary solutions, but if the company needs less workers then they're gone. The main difference would have been a known layoff approach probably newest hired go first with an option for seniors to opt in instead.
They'll also probably just take longer. Amazon is still trying to gut countries with labor groups and more regulation. They said it'll still happen but it'll just take longer
If they'd have unions the TC would be different.
It’s not a counterfactual in places like France, where workers have the legal right to elected labor representatives that must be warned about big company decisions ahead of time and may have veto power over those decisions. At the very least, there would be a warning period before layoffs are announced, and there would be an opportunity to find new roles, like in many European countries today. Historically, 2022 had one of the lowest rates of layoffs on record, but big tech propaganda about a recession is reaching iraq war levels of lies. Big tech made hundreds of BILLIONS in operating profits last year. There is no need for layoffs, they’re simply laying off to reduce worker power. Unions would prevent coordination of layoffs (which is likely illegal but there’s clearly been a lot of coordination) and to ensure people are not fired just so others can be hired right back for the same roles, even if performance was good.
It's not just about making billions, it is about making enough billions to gain back the high premium tech stock price used to command. They also need to grow profits since they are a growth industry so it is what investors expect. Right now profits are shrinking. At any rate, it's not some grand conspiracy plot against the workers, Che. If france is so great, why don't you try to work there? I'm sure they could match your TC
Big tech companies haven’t relied on capital markets for years because they’re insanely profitable. Big tech owes nothing to stockholders, as stockholders provide nothing to the companies. In fact, thanks to stock buybacks, investors are mainly parasites, sucking up cash flows that should go to investments and innovations, or to workers that actually generate all these profits.
Union downgraded the entry level professor salary to 60k-120k.
What was it before?
University without union and tier 1 Prof salary $200K-500k. Some gets close to million https://georgiastatesignal.com/georgia-states-top-paid-faculty/
Stop with the Union BS. Taking dues and funneling it to causes that not everyone believes in is not the answer. Most people in tech got what they voted for. Deal with it.
so the idea is that instead of prioritizing shareholder value by cost cutting the layoffs could have been minimized since these companies are very profitable
also what do you mean by voted for?
Unions = commie shit. Has absolutely no place in an environment where skills are needed and need to be rewarded appropriately
The layoffs are the reward now
it is not black or white, meaning it doesn’t have to be a commie dystopia. i just don’t want to be treated as disposable
Unions only power exist in their members willingness not to compete with one another. Would never work in tech.
