I received new grad offers from Meta (TC 180), Amazon (TC 175), and Bloomberg (TC 172). After calculating expenses, investments, etc. , I think I can comfortably live in NYC (Bloomberg) and end the year with $39k invested (30% of post tax) or go to Amazon/Meta and end the year with $62k invested (50% of post tax). Each of these options leaves me ~$1k for buying anything I want/traveling. In NYC I save/invest less but I feel like I'd have more fun with added time off, lower stress, culture, creative scene, and living in the city. I've also interned in Seattle and it wasn't amazing. My question is, am I being irresponsible/shortsighted? Also, if you were in my shoes or could go back in your situation, would you have prioritized enjoyment or TC? I want to enjoy myself but don't want to mess myself up for the future. I never had someone to teach me investment responsibility so I want to learn. #swe #newgrad #investing #invest #bloomberg #seattle #newyork #travel #wlb #saving #meta #amazon #personalfinance #investments
You are single, NYC.
True. Single life in big cities is fun

I think you've struck a great balance.
All of these are amazing offers, and even in NYC, 172k straight out of college is amazing. If you can budget to save tens of thousands your first year working, you can more than afford to make the "fun" decision to live in the city you prefer. You'll have your whole life to make money, and you're clearly on track for a very high paying career, so definitely choose the option you think you'd enjoy more over whatever the numbers say is "optimal"
Sounds like your heart is in NYC, go for it.
The fact that you are being responsible and asking these questions indicates you'll be successful regardless of which path you take. Pick whichever place you'll be most happy and go with it. And keep up the good attitude!
I’ll a designer and envy how much swe make, though I fully appreciate they deserve higher compensation. BUT Comparing my work load to swe co-workers, I find my wlb is much better. I’ll take the lower stress for lower pay. Also I’m not smart enough to be a swe.
No one is less smart brother. It's just someone choose a different path, took a different set of actions to reach where they are. Never underestimate yourself. Peace ✌️
If nyc is your heart, go to bloomberg nyc, interview prep and switch to meta e5 nyc at the 2 yr mark if you want
Lmfao meta e5 external w/ 2 yoe good luck
Meant e4*
Amazon consumed an entire decade of my life. Sure I have more money for it but I didn’t enjoy a second of it and my quality of life is no better than if I worked at a lower paying/tier company. I barely have taken one vacation in that time that I didn’t work on. I have high blood pressure even while on blood pressure meds.
No. I would work harder for early retirement.
Why? Live for today
@motorola Until you turn 45 and have to work at Wendy’s bc you are unemployable anywhere else
