I have an offer from Amazon as a principal engineer at Alexa and the total comp is significantly higher. My current TC is 450, Amazon is offering around 700. I think I'm underpaid (for the market) at YouTube and it sounds like they won't try to compete with Amazon for salary. I'm torn and worried about my work life balance at Amazon. Any advice? Any ex-googlers at Amazon? Is leaving Google a good idea?

Absurdities of the Bay Area 😒
you might as well interview at more places if you're thinking of leaving. You'll probably get similar TCs at others too.
This. Amazon ? Hell no
Take and and boomerang in a year or 2
underrated comment.
PE at Amazon writes zero code and gives out directives to sub teams with their influence. It’s meetings all day every day and lots of document reading and writing.
i have seen SPE writing entire services, watch talks from Mbrooker, most of what he explains, he has written the code for it as well.
Kudos to him for being exceptional, for majority of others what dontcome wrote is true. You might get a chance to rewrite a thing from scratch but that is about it for most PEs out there.
Congrats OP!
Yoe?
Come to fb. Similar TC and much better company
How close can Google match the comp?
I haven't told them about the offer yet. I mentioned my pay was below market to my manager but it sounds like they won't budge much
700k is very tempting but I am concerned about Amazon and that too Alexa has some bad reputation. Try for other companies LinkedIn, Twitter, Salesforce as you mentioned about WLB and see if they can match.
PE is a good gig. Take it.
Dude take it. I am surprised we are even discussing this. If you don’t like, you get a significant bump and leave for another company.
700k or work life balance. Choose one.
