Don't know what's all the fuss is about moving back to separate offices. For some context, been at MS for 8+ years with 6+ years in my own office. I'm an IC and need to focus for long hours on some days on code. The things I love about open spaces are * You feel a sense of togetherness with the team * Noise can be canceled out with headphones if needed. Hardly used mine in last 4 months. * I actually like the fact that my team mates are just an earshot away and I can easily ask them something if they don't have headphones on. * Don't feel bored sitting isolated all day like before. There are of course some cons like obnoxious teammates who talk louder for long periods of time and those who take Skype meetings from their desk. Other than that, overall I'm happy and wouldn't want to go back to the old offices anymore. And I think it better prepares us for jobs at other top tech companies who all follow open seating model. Less adjustment and culture shock when moving.
Personally #asAnotherIntrovert I like to have as much space as possible away from people. I don't hate people, but I like being able to not engage if I don't want to. maybe its social anxiety who knows but I feel exactly the opposite way. headphones != spatial privacy
So much this. I also really like people and enjoy conversing, but I don't like listening to other people's conversations when I'm trying to get shit done. Headphones help but are sort of a bandaid solution compared to a private room. Fortunately our office has private areas and libraries I can run off to when needed.
You feel a "sense of togetherness" :) and you call yourself introvert. Lol
I also find movement distracting.
It is the bright light that distracts me. I wish I could dim the lights when I code.
I think you have been fortunate with neighbors. It takes one co-worker to ruin all the benefits you describe.
