Importance of a referral for FANG
How important is it to get someone to refer you for a swe job at a FANG? Will it help you clear the Hiring Committee, or is it just good to get your foot in the door? TC 160 YOE 1.08
I think it depends. Definitely it helps you get an interview, but in some cases like at FB, the person was on the edge of passing the interview and FB told him if you have worked with someone who now works at FB and can vouch for you (technically and professionally) then we can give you an offer. He didn't have such a person, so didn't get the offer.

Referrals are helpful if you are on the border and the referrers have actually worked with you and have good enough knowledge about your work. Blind referrals are mostly of no help.

Blind referrals are good to get an interview. I asked for referrals from 2 companies (on blind), and got an immediate phone screen (and then onsite) from one, but never got anything from the other one.
Submitting a resume or applying online for a FAANG has a very low probability of being picked-up, but it is not zero. I applied for all FAANG and few others and Amazon recruiter responded.
I had fang recruiters reach out to me on LinkedIn recently. Probably because I live in the Bay and work for another big-ish tech company. Who knew working for vmware would get me a look from FANG lol 🤷♂️
My resume had nothing special and pretty much all of FAANG responded. Interestingly, very small percentage of unicorns responded (basically only Airbnb and Uber).
I did a cold application via LinkedIn without any referrals

Recruiters generally have a lot of heads they need to fill with as many warm bodies as they can get. I haven’t ever had a problem getting an interview.
Did you really just write your YOE to the hundredths place
I had to get your attention somehow
But does it matter as much as a referral for FANG? ^^^
