Life of 2013 to 2022 tech employees: Come in at 11am. Leave at 3pm. Feeling a little down today, I’ll mostly review a few PRs and commit a few lines of code. 2 hour lunch followed by mingling around the office. Today is Friday, I’ll drink starting at noon and cut out early. What the fuck - I didn’t get a raise after 6 months? Time to jump ship to one of the 40 linked in recruiter offers. Man I’m getting burnt out. I think we need a union for our hard lives. I can’t live in this brutal world. Title - Senior SWE. Total comp - 600k, which is 300k salary and 300k RSUs
Just because you’re a lazy fuck doesn’t mean the rest of us are.
Also: * Work 9am to midnight to meet that deadline for 15 days at a trot. * Get woken up at 3am for oncall because customer experience matters more than employee experience. * Sync across multiple timezones, yeah we came in at 11am because we were in a meeting at 7am to sync with India or a 1am meeting to sync with Singapore. Software Engineering is NOT at 9-5 job. It doesn't fit into it. Not being in the office DOES NOT mean we don't work. We DO NOT need to be in the office to be productive. SWE is a 24x7 job including the weekends. Don't forget, we are the real DOERS. The tech industry will do fine without SDMs, PMs, Directors but will disappear within a few days without software engineers. I really doubt you have ever been a real SWE, or you'd know all this.
Wasn't it peculiar how all the major tech companies suddenly unveiled LLMs or began discussing them remotely when interest rates were at an all-time high? My hypothesis is that they had already developed these technologies well in advance and only chose to release them when they felt pressured to safeguard their share prices amidst high inflation. Importantly, it allowed them to justify layoffs. It appears to have been meticulously orchestrated. If you believe that these tech giants genuinely concern themselves with employees slacking off at work, you're mistaken. Do they truly care about someone who works only five hours instead of eight daily? At most, it means the person isn't putting in 750 hours annually, which isn't substantial. I'd wager that tech layoffs will persist until at least next year after which they will stop and importantly start recruiting again.

I’m not sure where you were working 2013-2022 that allowed this? Please share company names.
