Hi guys I’m an incoming Tesla Intern in Palo Alto. I’ve come to realize how insane rent is in the redwood city - Palo Alto - mountain view region. I don’t work in software, but I’m trying to find housing in a software income dominated region. Would you guys have any advice for finding decent housing for a 4 month internship(Sept-Dec)? I’m coming from Canada, I’ve scoured Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, Airbnb, but I’m not sure if there’s some US thing I might be missing. Note: the region above is what I’ve found makes sense since it’s within about ~1 hour commute to the Palo Alto plant. TC: Working on a estimate monthly income of about 5700 after tax
East Palo Alto is also expensive now?
... and get shot as a bonus
Welcome to the Bay Area, where a $100k income means you need roommates.
... and beliw poverty line too
You can look for student housing community / shared apartment community. Sparta505 is one such example located in San Jose. There are a few in SF as well
"Incoming"? Are you a missile? On a serious note try to find roommates / south SJ for cheap housing.
It's a common figure of speech boss
I know. It's still a little ridiculous. Boss.
Housing is definitely cheaper in South Bay. Some students do end up going for 6 month internships so you may still be able to find a sub lease. There are other smaller universities here and you can check their Facebook page for housing. If you don’t have a car, my suggestion would be to live closer to one of the Caltrain stations
Not in California, I get a stipend of 2800 over 4 months, which isn’t even half of what I would need for housing
I can tell you for a fact it’s 2800 over 4 months in California, there’s also the incentive of 15$/day if you bike to work so if you really tried you might be able to get 1k a month from biking and stipend.
Live in Newark / Fremont or San Jose and commute to office.
Check out the LinkedIn group for tesla interns. Lot of posts about people seeking accommodations
Do they not help interns find housing?
They give a net stipend of 2800 when you start, that’s it. You find your own housing, that’s for California, I’ve heard factories in Nevada help with accommodation but not California
Welcome to the Bay Area. Getting Roommates is the only option for you. Try Sunnyvale, San Jose and Palo Alto, there are many students around Stanford /Palo Alto who leave their accomodation for the summer elsewhere, they are your best bet.
Unfortunately I’ll be interning sept-Dec so students will be around
You’ll still be able so find sublets where students are taking the semester abroad or traveling for an internship of their own.
