I am seeing so many people advertising false and incorrect titles on Linkedin. - L6 Solution Architects calling themselves "Field CTO" - L6 Sales Rep calling themselves "Director" Do recruiters really get fooled by this or do they know the reality?
I know right! I mean what the heck does an 'Engineering Leader' even mean?
Somewhere between EM1 and Senior EM2? If they are actually a Director+ they would use their real title.
Anyone that refers to themselves as a leader is cringe, regardless of level
I have seen junior engineers mentioning they led the engineering team 😅
They might’ve?
It's very unlikely that a junior engineer leads the whole engineering division for extended periods of time. I wish their peers see their description and have a good laugh
Hahaha I noticed this too. I also like the ones who have piped lists in their title like Board Member | Speaker | Tech Enthusiast.
I really dislike those. LinkedIn should make a separate field for the bs titles which don’t pay
And what is “Head of..”!!!
Ok I’m actually gonna bite on this, where I’m based outside of the US, “Head of” can mean the same as “non-executive Director.” So sometimes people put it because it sounds nicer. But 9 times out of 10, it’s a bullshit self-created title.
In US startups it means “senior manager” or “director” of some functional area. Some companies (like stripe) think they’re cool for avoiding hierarchical titles
The worst I've ever seen is an L6 who worked on mostly tech debt and got pipped after less than a year listed their role as Head of AI/ML
Customer facing roles tend to use these bombastic titles. More interesting than recruiters, are customers really impressed by these titles? My only guess is yes, otherwise why would all big tech companies follow that conform.
A few years ago, I was employed by a consultancy and my job title was "Associate Project Manager." However, when I was placed at a customer company, my job title was "Frontend Technical Architect." In reality, the tasks I performed were at a junior developer level, despite the more prestigious job title. I play around with those titles based on the job I apply for!
I knew an L5 manager in Kindle back in the day and his LinkedIn title was Head of Kindle
My roommate was in his first job after undergrad working for TEKsystems and he called himself a Principal Engineer on LinkedIn which didn’t make sense, after switching jobs a couple of years later he changed the title from Principal Engineer to Analyst 🤷♂️

Recruiters do reach out based on fake titles but they ask for a resume. If you lie about job title on resume that is fraud and fireable offense
Naah, I have had different titles describe my work. But provided the official title for background check. Never had any issues. Maybe im called technical staff at the company but I put "Software Engineer" on my LI because i did write code and build applications.
