Indian Immigration to Singapore

When Indians immigrate from India to Singapore aren’t they bothered by the fact that they are moving to a Chinese-majority, less democratic (Singapore is basically led by one family) country that practices universal conscription?

Amazon cosmicbird Mar 21

Not every Indian that immigrated there gets a citizenship and has to serve in their army. So meh. Most Indians that go there are temporary workers.

Actually they don’t apply for citizenship because they don’t want their kids to serve in the army.

But then again, how much actual combat would you expect in the Singapore military lol. Conscription is probably basically attending 2 years worth of summer camps.

Indians will live in Syria if the conversion rate is good and can show off when they go back on holidays.

Having been to both I would rather live in Singapore than India but admittedly I am not Indian…

Living in Singapore is amazing. The “chinese” majority means they are ethnically Chinese but not exactly the same as a person out of china. Think of Chinese Americans in the US - while they might speak the language and follow some cultural norms, but they’ve also been influenced by the American culture. There is some racism against Indians, but as a minority in any place, I think that is a fact of life. Democracy is an interesting question. As a foreigner in any country, you don’t partake in elections anyway. You can protest and stuff but how much do you care to change things in someone else’s country? It is not undemocratic in the sense of a “dictatorship” - there is no moral police - do what you want (no drugs though), drink, sleep around, wear less clothes etc. You will not have access to subsidized housing, healthcare and schooling like the locals, but that’s by design. Those services are not for foreigners, foreigners are there to boost the local economy. For Singaporeans and PRs, the government is very paternalistic. Think of a government who is like your parents - they ensure you have cheap housing, food to eat, subsidized healthcare and schooling. And opportunity to a great lifestyle - travel, going to restaurants/bars/events. So these are parents who are liberal and very helpful. Yes occasionally you may not see eye to eye on what’s best for you, but they have good intentions at heart and run the system as fairly as possible. So I would argue you “need” democracy less because politicians are not running rogue and corrupt, pursuing their own agenda. They also place highly competent technocrats at all government jobs. Because it is a small country, there is less plurality of interests as well, so the government is able to capture it. So things are not as they seem my friend :)

What if you want to criticize Lee Kuan Yew?

Bill.com uwEd80 Mar 21

Again, same principle - can you criticize your parents to them? Not really. You can go tell your friends. But do you want to post a blog about it? Naah not really. Most foreigners don’t care to criticize LKY. They are there to enjoy the low taxes, the nicer lifestyle, cleanliness, safety, schooling. So it really depends on what you value in life.

Indians aren’t bothered to move anywhere as long ss they get paid lol

1) Chinese majority is not an issue. Singapore has thousands of people from every nation. In fact you're likely to see more Indians in the office than Chinese if you work in tech. 2) Next in line is not from that family. That era is almost over. 3) Conscription doesn't involve you as a foreigner.

I’m pretty sure as long as it’s not India Indians will move there - they really don’t like being in India

Its bad choice to come to singapore. Having studied and lived here can say one thing for sure sg simply do not like Indians coming and growing up in the ladder and there comes a point in career when you will not have any way to move up higher in your career. The coat of living is very high now.
