I've heard from several people now that Indians get treated worse at tech companies than other races, especially those on visas. I also see lots of complaints on here about poor work culture and wlb at several tech firms, and again wondering if this was in any way targeted more at Indians. Feels a bit like because we've come from a poorer country, we should be happy to be in the West or something like that. I've also heard lots of complaints about working for Indian managers etc. Don't want to kick off a race war but very interested to hear your professional thoughts. How many of the complaints we see on here are Indians who are being treated badly I wonder? Thanks, and peace out x
There are so many Indian people working in tech in the United States that this is going to be a silly generalization no matter what. You might as well be asking for people to give anecdotes about working for white managers.
The grass is always greener syndrome
They are treated the same way as they treat others. Fair
Found the racist s******n, with a hate boner for Whites. How many times a day do you people fantasize being White?
Indians aren't treated poorer because they come from poor country.. I my previous job, I had co-workers from Cambodia, Philippines.. and they weren't treated poorer Indians are treated poorly by other Indians ( higher casts) and because some people make generalizations and treat all Indians based on a poor experience with some..
Don't plug caste into every discussion related to Indians. People caring about caste are an exception. Most of the time, people won't even know what caste you are if you have a generic surname.
Please don't reply with the customary Cisco and HCL article here.
Indians on a Visa don't act entitled. Don't start walking if there are 4 weeks of repeated late night calls. Most can be controlled by a pending i140. The barrier to switch jobs is higher because every time you deal with USCIS, you have to keep your fingers crossed. Indians because of the long GC wait remain a little within limits. They are low maintenance in a way. The manager(Indian?) knows that he/she can get away with more when dealing with an Indian junior employee
So I would categorize Indians working in tech in three categories: 1. Who did undergrad / high school in the US 2. Who did masters in the US 3. Indians who transferred from companies in India Category 1 is the most independent and integrated into American culture. Also likely to be from richer families since undergrad is expensive Category 2 has an open mind and is either frustrated by work experiences in India or has never experienced working in India. Category 3 has worked in India and is used to working long hours, being submissive to managers (in India your boss = God) and naturally brings that mindset over. Indians overall have a higher dependency on visas due to GC backlog. Combined with coming from a poorer country means that their dependents back home have less resources. Managers / bosses know this and some are assholes who take advantage of this and overwork engineers. I'm from category 2 and have never worked in India so I usually feel comfortable prioritization wlb and don't shy from setting boundaries with my managers. I've had coworkers from category 3 who do things which are pretty common in India. Try to send emails, code reviews at night to show they work longer hours to their manager and general ass licking of managers. TL:DR; Ultimately there are way too many indians in tech and due to combination of culture back home, dependency on visa and lack of money back home a lot of them get exploited by employers. A lot of bad managers are indians who've been on the other end and love the power dynamic change as well.
In most cases I've only seen us being treated just the same as any other American by other people. Some people are racist inside, and it isn't just targeted towards Indians in general.
My boss is Indian (I am not) and love working for him. Just one data point.
I’ve thought about that as well, there’s no way the working conditions and abuse at Amazon are as bad as this app makes it seems? I feel like it’s mostly people dealing with managers or other employees who are xenophobic and make no effort to close the language barrier.
That's what I think too. My experience at Amazon has been hugely positive, and wondering if it's a race related thing.
Yes
