IT is a cost center. SWE build the products that fetches these companies money. The further you are away from contributing to revenue, the lower you get paid. SWE and people in sales make the most money in tech because they directly contribute to the bottom line.

Infra engineers make the same as SWE, if not more. For example, Google has SREs that make considerably more than their product SWEs. What I've seen across my interviews is their fairly close, if not slightly higher in some companies
āITā people in most organizations are not the same as SRE. SREs do wayyy more than what a normal IT sysadmin would do. Plus many IT people canāt code for shit but SREs have to write meaningful code at some point in their jobs. Know the difference.
