Applying for sr dev role. Interested in coding challenge and onsite experience. Also how is working there ? Not much about it though it seems big
The coding challenge is tailored to your area of focus (backend/full-stack/front-end/mobile) and is pretty hands-on. It's 4 hours max and can be done at home if you like. If you end up doing it at home, your actual onsite will naturally be shorter and only consists of the system design + behavioral interviews. The contents and grading of the challenge itself are pretty straightforward. For example, if you’re a front-end dev then you might be expected to write a self-contained UI component using best practices. You can use whatever tech stack you’re comfortable with. The systems design interview is unremarkable in the sense that it matches what you’d expect out of any other systems design interview. So if you work your way through the systems design primer and can explain your thought process coherently then you’ll be fine. Behavioral interviews are also not surprising and generally just serve as a way to weed out assholes and select for thoughtful, reasonable people. Like with any company you’ll do better if you have a good story for your career progression and what you’re looking for at Instacart. I’ve only been at Instacart for a few months but I’m largely bullish so far. I don’t think I would have been happy at Instacart a year ago but right now the company seems to be making all the right moves. The company is essentially at a major inflection point spurred by Amazon buying Whole Foods. While Amazon is not to be taken lightly, the acquisition has had a hugely positive effect for Instacart so far. Multiple major retailers that were previously unwilling to work with Instacart have decided that they want to avoid the fate of B&N and have signed partnerships with us. We’ve ramped up hiring massively and are investing in the comp needed to attract high-quality industry hires (engineering/product/design as well as execs). On an engineering front there’s a major ongoing transition as we build out a sustainable long-term infrastructure. Even with all of this I’m finding the culture to be humble with an edge of hunger driven by existential dread. Overall I think we are well-positioned to compete effectively and execute on our long-term vision to be the leader in the online grocery space. Let me know if you have further questions or concerns, I’m happy to respond in a mostly koolaid-free way. Also feel free to DM me for a referral (this offer is extended to everyone).
While that’s true, the threat of Kroger and Walmart doing their own thing, cheaper was not there. The metrics the company wants to hit next year are incredible unapproachable.
Agreed on the crazy stretch goal, normal goal is along our current trajectory though. Kroger and Walmart are threats for sure. We’ll see!

Pretty good experience. There’s a 3 hour hackerrank round and a systems design round, rest are behavioral. Best part is the offer has no deadline so you can keep shopping around. Initial offer was competitive without having to negotiate.
Do you mind sharing offer details, planning to apply.
