Instagram eavesdropping?

I spoke about some of the items in random occasions and the very next day Instagram showed me ads on those products. I have not given microphone access to Insta, Fb, Messenger apps on my phone. Only WhatsApp has microphone access (which is the from same parent company). Also I searched something on my Amazon app and similar ads started on my Insta. I wonder either Insta is doing something behind the screen or some other apps eavesdropping my phone and working for Insta. If anyone experienced the same or aware of what might happening please discuss here. It will be of great help 🙏 Edit: Thanks for all the folks who provided constructive responses. @Others who got into blame game, please note that this post is not targeted towards your hatred. You’re not even required to reply to this post. #misc #instagram

You can get some help with these conspiracy theories on 4chan or maybe on Donald trumps social media.

This dude puts Jan 6 insurrection in quotes and pretends to be a free thinker. I wonder if one can get more delusional

Charter rzpu24 May 1, 2022

Yeah he calls it an “insurrection” when it was a terrorist attack. But oh well, no brown people were involved, so let’s soften the blow with the word “insurrection”

Pretty sure you also searched it, or searched it at some point of time on a platform that has permission to gather this information for ads being directed to you. Pretty normal stuff.

Almost everyone I know has experienced something like this

Apple HypeOS May 1, 2022

They literally said they searched it on Amazon …

Yes Zuck found some dirt on Timmy and told him to get rid of the privacy restrictions

Yea that’s true

Are you on iPhone? I thought Apple had a setting for not allowing apps to share info. Guess microphone isn’t included in the no sharing. This has happened to me but I thought I was being paranoid.

So Meta or Instagram doesn't listen to your microphone at all. Apart from what @Xenonite_7 said is true, there is one more factor at play. When you talked about that product to other people, someone might have searched about that product/brand. Now Ad companies (read Google and Meta) use proximity to show that ad to group of people who were in close proximity to the person who searched that ad. If you observe carefully, you might be seeing some random ads which you never talked about but your acquaintances might have searched that product/brand.

yeh this makes sense

Meta Xenonite_7 May 1, 2022

Yes this…

Meta btx23763 May 1, 2022

I mean given the very public information, and attendant impact to Meta financials, about Apple’s privacy push (where you work) I can’t for the life of me figure out how tech people think despite all that Meta found some magical way to circumvent permissions, gain access to the microphone, and use that for ad targeting. Even if that were possible it’d be pretty woefully inefficient.

Please note everytime these ad companies were sued and charger with huge penalty some of the unbelievable tricks got uncovered! If I am experiencing something after careful observation then I believe my experience rather than some public information!

Meta ronniel May 1, 2022

You mean tricks like making your iphone slower after two years or creating a mouse with a charging port that makes it u usable?
