I wanted to know generally how long it takes to move from Grade 8 to Grade 9 in Intel AI R&D teams. If I am doing great in the role and have good deep learning expertise. Any ideas here would be greatly appreciated. #semiconductor #intel #intelAI @Intel
about 10 years
Not overall exp. But time to move from 8 to 9.
If you do not play politics, waiting 10 years for gr8->9 is standard, and when you do get it, it is because management hands you a pity promo, not because of your merit or impact. All Intel promos over gr8 are primarily political... gr9 to gr10 and above is purely political.
The general rule of thumb is 4-5 years to jump grade at Intel. But 8 to 9 is usually harder, I think 7-8 seems about common. The average grade at Intel is 7.
Thanks IntelTME19. But 7-8 is too much. I will wait max 4 yrs for it. And next 4 yrs for G9 to G10.
Another thing to remember, especially with Intel, getting to hire grade also puts a target on your back. As you get past 8, there will be people actually trying to pull you down. I know people who purposely stay at 9 and never move up on purpose. Lots of politics and back stabbing, this really explains why leadership is currently so poor at Intel. Senior positions and executives spend more time fighting each other than doing good work.
10 years is way too much unless we’re talking total yoe. I’m planning on getting 9 next year with 10 yoe and starting at 3. I would agree with the politics comment, it definitely helps if you’ve saved some fellows out of some tight spots.
Thanks AQdM01. I am also 8 yrs exp. Targetting G9 in around next 2-3 yrs. How are you planning to show impact for G9? They you need to have bigger impact not just team, but across teams. Have you also published some research papers?
No papers, right, you definitely need folks advocating for you outside your team. Try to pickup some work outside your team with something that’s time to market critical. Things take course from there.
By the time you are ready for promo, the group might cease to exist...
I'm a bit surprised about the answers in this thread. I got from 8 to 9 in a year (6 yoe). If you perform well, are independent and know how to make decisions for the good of the team, tell your manager your goal is to be promoted and discuss about how to achieve it.
Can take 2-4 years depending on work / need and other variables such as budget
This looks realistic. Thanjs.
What’s the TC range for G8 - G9 in AI org? Is it based at Bay Area or Oregon? What are some of the key teams under AI org?
Base pay for Intel grades: 9: 123k to 209k 8: 105k to 174k 7: 91k to 150k 6: 80k to 127k 5: 70k to 105k 3: 65k to 87k These are for software engineer job code in the US outside of bay area. Bay area start about 10k higher and ends about 20k higher. Intel pays low but great wlb and sabbatical. Absolutely avoid Intel AI, it's terrible run and not one good product. Go to Nvidia if you want good AI hardware. Their future is much better.
Thanks. I saw some Apple ICT5 had a 1M+ stock at G10. He anyway picked Google L6. Wondering how high G8-G9 RSU can go in some of the top paying org.

For a promo, you need to be already performing at grade 9 level and there has to be a business need for a higher grade role in the team. And in general, it tends to get more tougher to go higher up in the grades, above grade 8. Make sure your compa ratio is good and you are getting good RSU’s.
Thanks userabc. Can higher compa ratio and higher higher RSUs help in promo?
Yes higher rsu and comp ratio can be seen as continued positive feedback but they are certainly not sufficient
