Intel begins layoffs today, Intel offering unpaid leave to manufacturing workers

The layoffs and cost-cutting that Intel Corp. executives recently warned about have begun in California, with a couple of hundred employees set to lose their jobs next month, and manufacturing employees worldwide being offered unpaid leave. According to letters Intel INTC sent to the state Employment Development Department, the company is laying off 111 employees in Folsom, Calif., and 90 employees in Santa Clara, Calif., which is home to the chipmaker’s headquarters. The layoffs, which are permanent, are scheduled to begin Jan. 31. Meanwhile, the company has offered employees at the company’s manufacturing plants in Oregon and elsewhere three months of unpaid leave, according to recent media reports. Intel spokeswoman Addy Burr confirmed Tuesday that the company is offering voluntary time off to its manufacturing employees around the world. https://www.marketwatch.com/amp/story/intel-begins-layoffs-and-offers-unpaid-leave-to-manufacturing-workers-11670357128

200 people in an org with 120,000. Why is this even news. Let the company work in peace and stop with the fear spreading.

It's simply that due to warn act there's something to write about. I think the much more interesting aspect is encouraging manufacturing people to go without pay for up to 3 months. This implies fabs are working at partial capacity, and if that's true, why build more ?

New fabs are for newer gen chips

This is incorrect, we’ve already been doing layoffs in rounds. First round was in early November before the holidays, the worst is yet to come we’re anticipating a lot more layoffs. Sales group alone has to cut 1000 heads for their first round. The way things are going, doesn’t look good.

Microsoft studmffn Dec 6, 2022

Aren’t they laying off 20k constantly over a long period?

Intel JumG65 Dec 6, 2022

I’m not sure if it’s 20K, that number was a rumor. But I have no doubt it’ll be close to that or more!
