I've been through a couple L4 team match interviews at Google but majority of them have been obscure teams focused on various niche domains in Google Cloud. Is this a normal experience at google? I would like to work on backend infrastructure/distributed systems but would prefer something less esoteric. I'm worried how transferable will be these low level/domain specific niche skills if I leave many years down the road. Does anyone have any advice/thoughts? I've been going through the same thing with Microsoft team match. Only azure infra teams seem to want me, probably cuz they can't hire enough people
Join and then switch. The decent teams don’t need to onboard nooglers generally because there are a ton of existing googlers who can apply for those positions first. Unless you have a background that’s directly applicable why would a manager choose you vs a transfer?
I think low level skills are more valuable, you can always spin up a new service but how often are you going to have the opportunity to do hard core infrastructure work
