Intern Cried

My itern cried during our weekly sync. All I did was ask where they wanted to focus on in regards to growth for the remainder of their internship. What did I do wrong? Wtf? I'm not great with people so am I an asshole?

Maybe they're intimidated / overwhelmed? Could be imposter syndrome?

Infinera Unsalted15 Jul 12, 2019

The outpour of emotion may be not work related at all. Poor soul might just be sitting at the tipping point before your question.

I once saw a cashier at Whole Foods just break down in tears while cashing people out. You could totally be right

Or maybe the intern cried because he was touched that somebody like OP was so invested in his career development and growth.

Document sequence of events in the form of an email to your manager. Hey, FYI types. Take brownie or cookies for said intern to the next one on one meeting. Ask if it will help if you appointed a day to day "buddy" to make said individual successful.

Amazon desudesu Jul 12, 2019

I think "appointing a buddy to make said individual successful" could make them feel like they're bombing or ostracize them

Microsoft UMbR31 Jul 12, 2019

That's why I suggested asking the intern and not appointing.

Another intern hid fresh sliced onions under the table. Your fault for not looking underneath.

Lol!

Hearing about day to day buddy for the first time. Is it really a thing?

Cisco byndinfini Jul 12, 2019

It used to be called mentoring. 🙄 Don't want to hurt anyone's fragile egos here.

SAP woos Jul 12, 2019

Poor intern : (

I was 16 when I had my first manager position that made someone cry. I'm more careful now but I still say its more them than you.

Microsoft UseDeFeet Jul 12, 2019

No rehire.

Amazon аlv Jul 13, 2019

Definitely not Amazon material. He shouldn’t cry as an intern. What would he do if he gets hired and then put on a dev plan?
