Hey everyone! I have two intern offers I'm trying to decide between, and would greatly appreciate any insight into either program, or opinions on what sounds better. As a note, this will be my last internship before I graduate, so I may be looking to convert the role into a full time one. Both are Software Engineering Intern roles. Offer 1: John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Laurel, MD Compensation: $37.50/hr + travel fare Offer 2: Wells Fargo Saint Louis, MO Compensation: $48.08/hr + $2500 housing stipend The compensations are quite different, but it’s just an internship, and I believe the full time compensation for both are similar according to Glassdoor and Levels.fyi. My main thought is that they’re very different entities. APL is a Federal/University research lab. The work was described to me by employees as in between industry and pure academia which sounds appealing. I’ll be working on applications for the U.S. Navy. Wells Fargo is, of course, a large bank with a more mainstream SWE department and is perhaps more well known. I’ll be working on applications for their Wealth Management & Investment department. I think the work at APL may be more interesting, but I don’t know which one would set me up better in terms of my skill set and my future career in the eyes of recruiters/my resume. Any thoughts? Finally, any opinions on the Laurel area (between Baltimore & DC) or STL in general? Thank you all for your help! #apl #wf #jhu #career #tech #offers
If you’re asking this idk what to tell you
But to be less useless. Also I was a navy officer if you’re working for a naval project it’s likely something related to air and missile defense. JHUAP has developed cutting edge algorithms, software, defense capabilities around radar + sensors + ballistics. I cannot elaborate more but it’s crazy stuff. I can see you leveraging this experience to get into the autonomous driving space. Tesla, way no, nvidia, etc are hiring like crazy I see it as the next big boom. DMV area is probably the best region in the US imo DC Is amazing and vibrant cannot comment on saint louis. Just my 2 cent gl
I'd pick offer 1 unless you really need more money. Sounds way more interesting and likely to set you up with a more diverse set of experiences.
JHU if you are going to go to grad school or desire defense firms. Else take Wells.
John Hopkins - for internship you shouldn’t be looking at small pay difference but what it will mean for future including recommendation letters and referrals. John Hopkins will be a good option vs well’s Fargo
