I need some tips on how to move internally within Microsoft. I am in a non tech PM role and several colleagues took around 2+ years to find something else internally. Their strategy was to look in the internal portal, reach out to the HMs for informational and apply for the role online. Is it just hard to find good non tech PM roles within the company or is there a better strategy to go about this? I really want to find something within couple months vs years. Tips please!
I use the strategy that your colleagues use. It will take longer to find another role because you won’t blindly apply for roles based on job descriptions. By doing this, you have the opportunity to get a feel for the hiring manager, the team and more details about the role. I told my first manager that I was looking for a new challenge and she basically said, “Good luck. If you don’t get a role soon you won’t have a job much longer.” I will never talk with my manager again.
Typical manager 🤣
Talk to your boss! They’re probably the best ones to help you. I would say most managers of your career in mind and realize that if you want to leave but you’re willing to stay at Microsoft, that’s a win for the company. If you don’t feel like you can do that, then message a random recruiter internally and ask who in the recruiting department is over what you’re looking for
I would caution against this even if you have a good working relationship with your manager. This is a job more suited for a dispassionate mentor outside your management chain.
Such a stupid advice!
