My friend in college is deciding between internship offers from Amazon (likely Seattle) and Twitter (definitely SF). Any recommendations? Any aspects of discussion are fair game, including the futures of either company and the livability of the cities themselves. Thanks in advance! Info (will update as I answer questions): My friend is a third year. My friend is from Socal but goes to school in the Bay Area. The offers are similar in compensation.
Does your friend know which teams?
Amazon. Will look much better on resume and will get much better hands-on experience.
Amazon +1 . Engineering has way better there.
I interned at Amazon. I also know someone that went from Amazon to Twitter and quit within 8 months... Feel free to ask me any specific questions about my experience there.
You sure your friend quit willingly? Not forced out due to incompetence? Because your friend just need to stay 4 more months to have rsu vested.
Nah. I worked with him. He was a solid senior engineer. He said he hated it there and straight up quit.
I disagree that amazon looks better than Twitter on resume. I personally feel the opposite. I believe different people would have different opinion on which looks better, unless someone can give evidence for why, op's friend should ignore such comment. I also believe in general, intern at twitter would have more ownership and more real work, because it is a much smaller company than amazon. I'm not familiar with amazon's engineering quality, but Twitter's has always been very good, I personally believe twitter is a much more engineering centric company than amazon. For example, see some of twitters open source projects: heron, finatra, manhattan database, etc.
Although I'm not denying that Twitter would be a cool place to work, Twitter is no comparison to the tech power house that Amazon is. Alexa, Retail, AWS(!), Prime, logistics, payments, Kindle, customer service tech, Amazon Go, and the list goes on and on. In terms of access to knowledge, there's no comparison.
Twitter is Rachel Green, and Amazon is Monica Geller.
AFAIK Twitter gives 2K pretax housing stipend which is low for SF. What's Amazon situation?
if pay is not a concern then Twitter no doubt.
Twitter. Unless AWS, in which case it's debatable and depends on what you want to grow.
Even then, it depends on that the team in AWS does. It's an big place, so there's lots of peripheral stuff.
I worked with a few interns at twitter. All of them contributed
Sent too early: all the interns made non trivial contribution to the services they were working on. I am not too familiar with Amazon, so can't compare.
