Interviewed as an Android/Mobile engineer with Chime Instacart Figma DoorDash Google Square Shopify Uber Nextdoor Robinhood Twitter Got offers from all except Figma. Accepted Chime@255K Base + 15% Bonus + 19K units (not dollars) RSU. Can help answer any questions since I think I generally don’t see high level Mobile datapoints.
Any tips for mobile architecture rounds? Existing materials are lacking
I know. I have been meaning to create a site since I find the online material really lacking. Everything focused on server side scaling and and not enough application architecture.
My strategy is to always talk about journey. Journey can be of a file (e.g design Dropbox), a post (e.g design Instagram). Follow this sequence 1) Datamodel & API (if not provided) 2) components the data travels through (fetch, store, cache , display) 3) component lifecycles and clear understanding of when and what triggers what 4) Really drive the interview. Don’t ask question such as should I cache this data or not. Just decide, justify the decision and move on.
What level senior? 19k seems surprisingly low (any chance you missed a 0?) Also curious how was Figma and Chime interview process
19K units not dollars.
Figma: Seemed very specific to their domain. Representation of documents in code and thinking about editing, copying elements, making elements templates that can be reused etc. I didn’t do well Chime: Mix of algorithmic and real world coding on Android Studio
Big congrats OP
What made you choose Chime? I had my hesitations because they’re react native focused? But it seems like your interview was in native Android? And another question is... what do you think differentiates an L5 and an L6 engineers for mobile?
Yes they are, I interview on Native Android but they made it pretty clear my job will be react native before the interview. I am not concerned about the transition. I don’t think there is exactly one path from L5->L6. My path has generally been by being able to abstract going very deep into performance, reliability and testing of products I have been building
Thanks for the response! 👍⚡️
What was the instacart offer? Probably higher than chime right
Congrats! How'd you prepare for the algorithm questions?
Don't go to ND. They screwed recent hires over.
How?
Instacart was the best TC but I consider them overvalued Chime had the best cash offer (important since the RSU are not liquid until IPO+6months at ~290k including bonus.
not liquid until IPO+6months - is this mentioned in offer letter or its normal practice ?
Was 14.5b valuation mentioned somewhere in chime offer?
