Interview experience - Compass

I just had an interview with compass and I’m amazed at how companies conduct interviews for tech roles. Leaving my take here, would like to see what people think, and hoping recruiters at Compass see this! 1. Please don’t outsource phone screens to third party companies! Talking to someone in India who has no knowledge of the company and thus could not share any inputs or answer any questions is poor candidate experience. Experienced hires would want to learn about culture and engineering experience to make a decision to move ahead or not as well. They say you can schedule the interview 24x7, now why would I take an interview in the night? 2. Focus on quality over quantity!! I was asked multiple coding questions with emphasis on just solving and no care for code quality or performance. I spent time structuring the code and making it readable, which is how good engineers should write code, so was only able to complete1 question. When would I ever be required to come up with scrappy solutions to coding problems and be required to just get it to work. This looked like a school exam, I’m pretty sure a fresh out of school would do way better than a person with 5-10 years of experience! I was using this interview to get some experience as it’s been a while since I interviewed, but just amazed at how some companies conduct intervs! We invest our time as well, and it’s only fair to expect a better experience, specially for experienced hires. TC: 🍌 @compass

Lol Karat?

Amazon rtyeidg OP Sep 24, 2021

Yeh, first time I heard of it as well.

Just say no to companies asking you to interview with Karat. It’s easier to just take hacker rank/codility online assessments

Maybe they got tired of being used as interview practice 🤣

Amazon rtyeidg OP Sep 24, 2021

Haha fair point. I once got asked by a recruiter if I’m serious about switching or just checking the market out.

Karat is useless. Had a similar experience where i had to reschedule because the interviewer never showed up in my case(twice)

Microsoft Nandato? Sep 24, 2021

I had a very similar experience with Compass. Can’t agree more.

I have an interview for robinhood next week done by Karat.

What level were you going for?

I had a phone screen with a recruiter today for a staff engineer position and I was told that the technical round will be with a member of their team. So are they moving away from Karat?

I think the OP got frustrated because he/she did not crack the first screening round and think of themselves as an entitled senior engineer. OP, if you are a good developer you can come up with the organized meaningful code in 1 go without have to come later to restructure it. The screening interview is designed to test your breadth of knowledge and hence you have to solve multiple questions. for you "organized and structure" code there are the onsite rounds, which you would not know as you didn't reach the round.

Lol… everyone is a rockstar critique until rubber meets the road.

Can anybody suggest what questions can we expect in coding rounds of on-site?
