Been giving some interviews lately and it really boggles my mind as to how much notes the interviewers are taking lately. Almost all the time, I see them writing something down on their computers as I am answering a question/talking about something. Also makes me think - are they taking notes or just replying to emails ? So - if you've taken a lot of interviews - what are you guys taking notes of ? What kind of things are important enough to be noted down and are these notes just for your own self, or do they become some sort of record that can be seen by other interviewers in later rounds/different positions ? #hardware #apple #qualcomm #samsung #arm #google #amazon #software
They probably doodling
It helps to recollect candidate’s plus and minus especially when you are interviewing multiple candidates.
As I asked another person already, is it just for your own personal reference or are these notes shared with other interviewers as well and does the feedback form a record in the HR system ?
Could be both. I do it for personal and if I need to share my views - the notes come in handy to recollect my thoughts.
I take notes because it can be hard to remember everything when interviewing lots of candidates, using my notes allows me to be more objective. I use pen and paper so it doesn't look like I'm working
So you're saying it's more for your own personal decision making ? How does it work when multiple people interview the same candidate for a role ? Do you pass on your notes/feedback to the next interviewer ?
I don't pass on my notes, but I let them know what questions I asked so they don't ask those.
I write verbatim what the candidate is saying. I later use this to help format my feedback as well as cross check anything I think the candidate might have missed (every once in a while I’ll forget they spoke about X during some other topic)
Why don't you just record it and play it back later?
Wow that would be a pain in the ass to listen to an hour long conversation to figure out a small blurb
It is required to minimize biases, so you are not significantly rephrasing based on what you remember.
More notes - more detailed feedback - less chance of bias, hiring committee can dig deep to make sure interviewer didn't screw up in evaluation.
100% note taking and required
All online interviews where I work are recorded, so technically I can rewatch the interview later and take notes but I don't wanna waste 45 more minutes on the same interview.
We are asked not to record the interviews..
it's required note taking for your leveling and for decision makers to make a decision on facts..
