How difficult would it be for someone working at a small startup for 7 months as a SWE to land interview/get offer from IBM? How good would it be for career growth? #tech #softwareengineer #career #ibm #interview #jobhunt
Easy and ehhh
Consider other options.
Why’s that? What drawbacks?
There are just so many better options that lie to you less.
Why would you consider IBM?
Is it not a good company?
Depending on what you’re looking for, it can be a good or bad company. If you’re looking to work in web development (where all the big money is, where the tech stack changes rapidly and you can be left behind), then ibm is not good. You’ll be underpaid and start behind and have a hard time getting a job at a good, and well paying competitor. But if you’re looking to just break into coding, start a SWE career as a EE grad, then it’s good. Just keep tabs on the industry on your own and realize ibm doesn’t pay well.
Would be a walk in the park. Especially coming from a startup. IBM is where you go to cruise and not do shit. It will kill your career growth no doubt. Unless you exit within 2 years
Yeah I was planning on using it’s popularity to be under the radar from recruiters at other large organizations. How has your experience been?
It’s easy to get into if you can actually find an open position they’re hiring for
Is that because I now have experience? I remember getting ghosted for 3 separate internships back in college.
Attrition rate is super high
Very easy if you are a competent developer.
I'd stay away. Ibm hired me a dev and im out here doing the complete opposite of work. A few other devs that were hired are basically just setting up meetings and working on excel sheets. Ibm has the easiest interview process ever. My interviewer asked if I was interviewing with other tech companies. I told him and was basically told right then and there over the phone that I was hired.
To give a counter example.. I work on a product constantly pushing out new features using relevant tech (Go, grpc, React, Kafka, k8s). My interview was also very easy, but everything they told me about the state of the product was accurate. I’m coming up on a year
Must be nice 🤧. I'm in interview process already and hopefully leaving before my 1st year.
Consider other options. IBM is dead end. There is no growth and management is quite clueless pivoting direction every couple of months, jumping on the latest buzzword bandwagon
