Am I alone w/ this? My team is deemed “safe” at AMZN, but I’m interviewing @ MS. I can’t promote to L7 w/o L6P experience which I wasn’t selected for when I tried (materializing a design almost from thin air wasn’t impressive enough). My BU codes my team non-tech where other BU codes the same job tech and the other BU obviously gets paid better for the same role. I’m bored at work and the entire taking on initiatives seem to be a scramble for what will stick. Ready for a change of scenery, but MS #layoff announcement have me second guessing. Hoping I’m not stepping in 💩 TC: $173K “Non-tech” YOE: 14 (3@AMZN) L6
I am in the same boat. I actually finished my interviews last week, and they went very well. I know it typically takes MS a week to get back to candidates, but I’m debating whether I should nudge the recruiter I worked with or not. They might have other things to worry about today.
I received update from HR , after verbal offer communication that all offers have been put on hold
Hang on. Now's not the time to feel bored of your job. Stay put for the next 2-3 quarters and wait for things to improve.
How about that obligation to “develop the best”? Can’t be my burden only why I’m bored. Hanging on by a thing thread, but doubt it’ll last another 2-3Q. Bias for action fail.
Op Here is the thing. Msft internally is very disconnected. Some orgs are laying off, others are hiring. However if you feel secure at amazon then don't join msft. The upcoming performance review cycle could be super rough. The thing is most teams will give new hires in year 1 meets expectations however that could change. Msft will continue to have rifs going forward. Recession barely started and the company is cutting so many people. I don't think 11K is correct number. I think it's more like 5K but still what do you think satya will do later as economy keeps deteriorating. A lot of people are incredibly stressed. There was a thread internally of someone contemplating ending their life. Few people saying they accepted peanuts in exchange of job security etc.
Isn't that TC low for 14 yoe? All the best btw.
Nope, not a SWE/SDE type, plus non tech code =30k pay difference for my role. Welcome to the reality of most non-SDE type engineering professionals.
Go ahead and interview. If you get an offer it will be after the bulk of the layoffs at both Amazon and Microsoft. If nothing else, it's good practice.
Lol. Bulk of layoffs at msft not done. Activision deal needs to close still. Quarterly layoffs on the cards like 2009 style except this recession is impacting MS much worse
I am sorry to hear that, @Microsoft. My spouse was there during the 2009 cuts and it was brutal. That said, both Microsoft and Amazon are well capitalized meaning they are safer businesses than most.
Sounds like you’re a non-technical product or program manager
I am a product manager, but how “tech” is defined is inconsistent @ AMZN. My role is heavy on design management. Heck, I’m even capturing the design handbook as a knowledge repository for a new product my L8-L10 did not know was possible, but I successfully conceptualized and launched. MS considers my function as TPM, so it’s a way for AMZN to maintain pay disparity.
How can your TC be so low at L6 ?

All the best. There are many teams at MS that are still actively hiring. Only few selected areas have seen the layoffs. Also per managers decisions. Here's some MS interview questions I referenced https://www.pinnacle.report/p/microsoft-interview-questions
Good luck!
