I have worked at TikTok US core tech for 3 years. AMA.
FYI - FAAAM stands for Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Alphabet (Google's parent), Microsoft Big papa Microsoft is touching $2T soon. And I'm glad my TC is touching $500k L65+. The great part? I work 30 hrs/week, have zero work stress and get so much time off every month I have friends at Linkedin, who would soon touch between 700k - $1M TC as E5-E6 and they get 4 day work weeks and multiple weekly shutdowns on top of that. They don't brag as much here on blind as other folks. For those who work at these 5 companies, we know how good we have it, we have the privilege to work on the most used products in the world. Getting these names on your resume commands immense respect and it's so easy to move between these 5 once you're in the club. There are obviously other smaller companies with great work culture or pay etc (Netflix, Airbnb, Stripe, Pinterest, Databricks..) but on the whole, FAAAM define the tech industry throughout the world and are at another level. They're the infra for most tech companies in the world (Azure, AWS, Google cloud), provide platforms to build product on (.Net, iOS, Android etc) and run the OS and services for all the devices in the world (Windows, Mac, Alexa etc) About TC and refreshers at Microsoft: Microsoft is great as a new college grad and L64+ for pay. Not so great at L60-L63. It all depends on how you play the game. Jump around and try to get lucky. You're always balancing between WLB, Stress, TC and Prestige Personally, I've always wanted to work for Microsoft and Google. These two companies produce some of the best products in the cloud and consumer space with a strong engineering culture and history of deeply caring for it's employees. These two companies are consistency listed among the most ethical companies in rankings #tech #microsoft #google #facebook #amazon #apple
Don’t insult our intelligence by thinking your 2 made up friends are evidence of high TC compared to real compensation data. MSFT pay is overwhelmingly low compared to FANG. Until they correct that your trash acronym is just a bad marketing campaign.
MS pay might be less but people are much nicer. Amazon employees are pos
Honestly being at MSFT was the worst experience of my career. Yeah didn't have to work a lot but it was such a toxic cesspool of politics when it came to what work would be prioritized, stakeholder relationships, and reviews.
I'm sorry for that. I had a horrible experience at Microsoft myself. But I changed to better places. It's the same at other FAAAM too. Bigger the company, more variance in experience. If not, there wouldnt be 25 yrs+ lifers here at Microsoft But on the whole, still a great place to work. I'm sure there are horrible and great teams to work at FB as well.
My experience at FB has had its ups and downs but on the whole has been far better than my time at MSFT. I don't think I'd ever consider working there again, though I have plenty of friends who have had at least pretty good experiences at MSFT.
I never knew why Netflix was in FAANG. It’s a tier 2 company.
Because it's to do with stock. Plenty of companies are better than Amazon and a few better than F/G.
Lol on what basis do you define what a tier 1 vs 2 company is??? Netflix pays more than most, and its all cash.
It should be GAAND. google, amazon, aapl, nflx, doordash
I worked in MS for first 3 years in my 8yoe. It has the best wlb so far. My first team had a great culture. We used to pull pranks in office. We have great outdoor team building events where everybody was enjoying instead of showing off for visibility. When I was young i never valued WLB and prioritize learning. But after getting married I wanted to go back to MS or try Google. Sadly there are no relevant jobs in uk (in both MS and google) and just joined FB london. However i have heard that WLB is not good in FB (and everybody is dying for visibility in my friends team). If things goes bad in FB i will definitely try again in MS.
I share the same experience from my early years at Microsoft. A lot of the tech industry culture was invented in Microsoft's early years...white boarding for coding interviews, product management as a role in tech industry A lot of the VPs and leaders at FAAAM and unicorns were from Microsoft in-fact. Facebook is a great company and I’d love to join leadership roles there later. Don’t see myself slogging as an IC to prove myself again now
@op can I DM you for a chat? Don't need a referral, just want to talk and understand more about how you got where you are and your team/org.
I've heard it called FMAGA a lot (with the unfortunate political undertone), but same companies, and I agree with your assessment.
I have also heard AMF4G (with the unfortunate undertone) or AMAF4G including Airbnb. But if you want to include Msft you may as well make it F4GMAN.
Why are we on the list? Amazon has 20 hrs work per day for some teams (not per week) What team in MS are you on?
Because FAANG is related to stock, nothing else.
I'm sure there are better places at amazon to work with good WLB. Bigger the company, greater the variance in employee experience
