£80K base + £70K RSUs Would I need to cash RSUs for a good life? What about this comp for a family? Single?
Lol of course it is. You’d be making more than 99% of people in London. It better be enough. And it’s not like there are other companies who’d pay much more.
Look up London's median individual income by borough. Even in the wealthiest neighborhoods, it's under 60k pounds. IIRC, it's under 40k pounds in all boroughs except the City of London
If you are used to an American lifestyle, no. Taxes are 40% and while food is better quality and less expensive, just about everything else is much poorer quality and more expensive.
Lmao what a load of BS. This is only true if you're the kind of choad who can't live without owning at least 2000 sq ft, 2 SUV's and a large yard, with a basic spouse who spends too much and has no savings or TC
So glad you know me so well! No car, small flat in a decent area. 80k is approx 4000 per month. Decent flat (no dryer, tiny fridge) is about 1700 per month. Tube 140 per month, if you take the train it can be much higher. So right there you have about 2000 in disposable income each month. Same job in the US after rent and transportation, I had 8000. It's not about big home and cars. It's about the quality of the products the same money can buy and your buying/savings power.
You’ll be earning more than most working class /middle class people in the UK.More than sufficient. If you want a huge house, yatch, etc probably not but other than that you’ll be fine.
Make sure you understand the tax situation well. At £150K, you’ll pay £54.5K/year in income and national insurance tax. Some employers will make you pay the employers portion of NI tax on your stock, which is another few £K. Housing is expensive compared to anywhere that’s not SF or NY. Food in general is better and cheaper at grocery stores. Restaurants are much more expensive than in the US. On the other hand, maids and cleaners are cheap. If you have kids, many of the public schools in London are shitty. The ones that are good are very hard to get in to. Private school can be anywhere from £10K - £17K/year/kid. You won’t be saving a lot for the future depending on your lifestyle.
You’re almost certainly going to want to cash in the RSUs if you want a good life.
For 80k/y net is around 4500/m. Subtract medical insurance of about 100/m (free NHS is shit, sorry guys) and pension contributions. Tax for RSU is 55%. In the central London a tiny (all living places are tiny here) 1br is about 2000/m, studio is about 1500/m. Zone 1/2 Underground commute is 100/month. Decent food in groceries is about 500/month. If you decide to live outside of London, housing will be cheaper, but commute will be more expensive: trains can easily cost 500/month (plus Underground from the train station to the office). State-run primary schools are okey, secondary schools are total shit. So, your base it's okey for a single or for a family without children. For the family with children you'll have to cash RSUs.
Oh, and ignore these "you'll earn more than working class/median income" claims, people with such income are living in the poverty here.
Of course you’ll cash your RSUs. But when you do, you’ll be living an extremely comfortable lifestyle by London standards. It won’t be lavish, but it will be good.
Absolutely. You will be very comfortable on £80k - your RSU is gravy. For benchmark, I'm on ~£105k/year total comp (Base + bonus + stocks). My wife is on £35k. With this we were able to comfortably afford a three bedroom family home in a lovely area a bit further out of the city (but with good transport links). We eat out a couple of times a week and are putting plenty away in savings.
Which company do you work for ?Im interested in a list of companies in London that pay > 100k .Can you PM me

As a couple without kids, with one income and supporting a partner paying 8k per year for university, 50k was pretty good a decade ago. Not a great data point, but it's all I've got.
