Just received a verbal offer from Airbnb for G10(L6) role. No numbers yet. I am an ICT4 at Apple. No real path for ICT5 promo in the next few years. I didn’t interview at many places as I am looking for both good TC and flexibility. Yes, I know I sound entitled but Airbnb is probably the sweet spot to get both. I have friends at Airbnb and they tell me their wlb is amazing so I interviewed. My main concern is they had layoffs in 2020. I’ll probably have the same base and I am ready for the initial RSU grant to go lower in the near future. I am interested to hear how’s the culture and perception from within the company. Do you feel Airbnb is a good place? Do you have concerns about the future of the company? Obviously, there are no guarantees but I think employees usually have “spider senses”. Basically, if you could get the same TC at a relatively more stable company (Google, Microsoft, Apple), would you go for it? YoE: 12 TC: 500k (due to stock appreciation)
Honestly it’s probably worth it. I hear their culture and wlb is good. Probably better than Apple. If you get laid off, you can probably always get another job considering your yoe and background
I have definitely heard good things about their wlb. And no question it’s better than Apple. I am pretty comfortable here and can coast if I have to. No flexibility with RTO is a big turn off for me. But I am a bit scared to leave Apple only because of the possible economy downturn and companies start laying off left and right. I agree that I should be able to find another place if laid off but still…
I would say ride it out at apple for now! Market isn’t promising in near future
Why will people go for vacation in recession?
They stay at Airbnb instead of Grant Hyatt
Why will people even plan for vacation ( Airbnb or Hyatt is not the question) Most people will try to save and avoid leisure expenditure when recession hits. But this does not mean OP should not switch to Airbnb. If you have faith on your skill, today or tmrw you will get new job if something goes south
Frankly it's hard to predict. But apple is safer than Airbnb
Sure, I am curious how the current Airbnb employees feel about it.
Which apple office are you in? How is the WLB?
I am in Seattle. AI/ML. WLB is not too bad but inconsistent. My main problem is I have to be in the office for 3 days in a few weeks with no real reason. The bulk of the team is in Bay Area so I just end up joining Webex from the office for most of the meetings.
Oh man in Seattle with 500k... I'd rather stay! Especially if the only concern is getting next level because things may suddenly turn around and an opportunity appears. Too many unknowns in any new company.
Just think about it. When people start cutting out unnecessary spend, personal travel will be the first thing to go. I have already cancelled/reconsidered my upcoming planned trips
Do you plan to upgrade your iPhone, MacBook and iPad? (Assuming you use them)
Yes I’m an iPhone user and Mac user. Barely upgrade. Usually upgrade my phone once every 2-3 years and I’ve been using 2015 Mac Pro. But I probably don’t represent the average consumer.
No company is recession proof. Remember that. Yes there were layoffs in 2020, but 2020 Covid recession was a once in a lifetime moment. That was not a normal recession; people not being able to travel anywhere safely with the fear of dying screwed travel companies. That is not the same as a potential recession that may occur in the near future. On that note, I think Airbnb is a solid place. It’s not amazing, but our new work from anywhere policy is awesome. The challenges aren’t that exciting. The people are good though and WLB is okay. I’ve worked late hours on many projects and so have my team members. It’ll always depend on your team and scope of work. We recruit a lot of people from Apple so I think you’d fit in. I don’t have concerns about a layoff because we’re doing very well. We just released earnings last week and the company is continuing to crush it. Stocks are down but so are most companies’ stocks. I think we are safe this year and next.
Thank you for your reply. I agree with your point regarding 2020. I don’t count on stocks so as long as the base salary is good, I am ok with the fluctuations and even feel it might be a good time to join a good company. I think Airbnb is a good business (and use it a lot personally). Thanks again! This is exactly what I am looking for :)
@abnb any teams you’d recommend to stay away from ?
Any company relying on discretionary spending isn’t recession proof. ABNB’s forward PE ratio is 100 compared to AAPL’s 25. As long as you’re okay with getting a TC hit in the short term because of stock depreciation, you can go follow your heart. I wouldn’t worry too much about lay offs as long as you’re a citizen and have 24 months of expenses in cash (24 months because of inflation/stagflation concerns)
Thank you! Yeah, no concerns regarding visa and status.
No. Airbnb is a $20 stock.
:) that’s cute
This is called projecting
What did Airbnb offer you?
I haven’t started negotiations yet. Just got an email today that they want to proceed with the offer. Before the interviews I told them 600k+ is my expectation.
