My wife and I work in the city and we live on the South Bay Area. Everywhere (at work, friends, neighbors) I am hearing about Austin. I understand it’s a circle but for this time it seems real.
It’ll be PNW before Austin. Plenty of nice jobs there. Austin has the benefit of being in Texas, but not having a lot of the conservative BS that drives the rest of the state.
Not at all. Career wise it's not even seattle or new york. It's just become a popular place for people who are tired of the grind to go settle down.
Austin doesn’t have exciting opportunities in big tech companies as well. People come here to settle down
Ya exactly. I love Austin. It’s a great fun place to live and you can find good to decent tech jobs here. You can get a job with high TC, buy a house bikable to downtown, and have plenty of money left over. But it’s not like a center or exciting tech work. Most of the big co offices we have here are primarily dealing with something like CX or moderation, and there isn’t really as much mid-sized cos and start ups as you’d like for a really lively job market. I spent my early 20s in CA and moved here when I was 27 and was thinking about buying a house and kids someday.
Austin is already ruined by CA transplants, yes.
Everything is ruined by CA transplants
It's funny. A famous conversation starter in Austin is about how long ago someone moved there. As if the only true OG is the one who moved earliest. Truth is you're all a part of the "problem" and you just don't know how to adapt because these new folks seem "different" but you're actually the same.
Traffic sucks than bay area. Tech layoffs starts from Texas
Stay in CA. Leave my city alone.
Ah, good old NIMBYism. The politicians in your state hate your city so much they passed an amendment to the state constitution so they wouldn’t have to live there, and apparently you also don’t like the areas that are most similar. Or are you one of the people that thinks Austin improved instead of losing something when Leslie died?
no, too hot will melt your car interior
It is not the new Bay Area. I guess it does not need to be. The combination of year-round good weather, endless tech opportunities for 50 miles on 101, high density of rational people and many more factors make Bay area unique. Don't go to Austin looking for Bay Area there. You won't find it. Go to Austin looking for what it is known for. I am sure you will enjoy.
Pay will be lower, weather is worse, traffic is as bad or worse, and culturally and demographically it's the most liberal part of Texas but it's still vastly different than the Bay Area. Most Bay Area people have a difficult time adjusting, especially if they're married or have a family.
It’s really white too, if you are used to diverse areas
What's wrong being white?
Austin is good for simpler 9-5 tech opportunities
