Is Boston still worth it?

The traffic isn't improving and the housing costs are getting close to NYC levels 😢

Facebook nvm Aug 7, 2017

really? it was 20% cheaper years ago. prefer bay area or NYC if the price are the same.

Prices are WAY cheaper than the Bay Area. My rent for a 2 bed/1 bath a 10 minute bus from Kendall Square in a cool neighborhood was $2200. You can't really do that in the Bay.

yea. so still way lower. I was surprised by this post because it seemed very inaccurate unless prices went up 20-30%.

I just moved back to The Bay Area after 2 years in Boston. If you want to live in the city, the prices approach NYC. If you can live on the edge by a T stop, the prices are better.

If you're worried about housing costs, check out charlotte NC, the IT market is strong and the cost of living is extremely low compared to BOS NYC and the bay. By the way, Boston is outrageously expensive but is by far cheaper than NYC and the bay. The difference is that the standard of living here in Boston is way lower than either of the other places (read: you get less for your money in Boston - old buildings, no laundry, poor conditions are acceptable in the Boston market)

The Boston rental market is totally messed up by all the students.

I moved out of Boston in 2015 and took my family to Silicon Valley. My rent went up $300 but my salary jumped 50%. So yeah definitely Boston rent is messed up. I actually grew up in Boston and was sad to have to leave due to rising costs

I don't know about NYC being more. On the low end is close.

I pay less for a 2BR/2BA in East Cambridge walking distance from Kendall than I did for a 1BR in Queens (LIC), it is not near NYC levels except possibly in the brand new high-rises. That said, I wouldn't want to drive around here though.

Also paying ~6.5% less in (state) income taxes compared to NYC (state + city) is a significant amount of money.

But salaries won't be same as NYC

Paying 1800 for 1 br/ba and 200 $ utilities sucks

That's how much I pay an hour out for my house that was built last year...
