I have a really interesting opportunity at Canva that I’m exploring - it’s almost exactly the kind of work I want to be doing, very exploratory and in a lot of ways it’s the kind of work I’ve been trying to turn my job at IBM into with little success (I’m currently doing the work, but it’s not my primary role, and I’m not exactly encouraged to keep doing it). Overall I’d say I’m pretty excited about the opportunity. Canva is doing some interesting work, they’re highly influential in the “non-professional” design space which I find a lot of personal interest/curiosity in, and I think I could bring a new & valuable perspective to the team I’m interviewing with. I haven’t received an official offer yet but overall it seems like a good fit for myself and Canva so it’s something I’m thinking about more. The TC is higher than my current pay even with the USD/AUD conversion rate. Current TC = $150k USD base with a few meager bonuses here and there. We also just got rid of 401k matching. Prospective Canva TC: $240 - $280k AUD ($180 - $220k base w/ equity = 100% base salary over 4 years), roughly equals $160 - $190k USD, plus 11% superannuation contribution. They’re also likely to IPO soon apparently so that could be nice, but tbh I don’t have much experience with equity because IBM lol. I’m also a little worried the culture might be affected by an IPO. I currently live in Dallas, Texas - and I’m tired of this city. It’s boring, car dependent, and it’s difficult to find people I vibe with - I’d say the majority here are looking for a traditional/conventional lives, which is fine, but it’s not really the kind of environment I need to be in. My partner and I have considered New York, DC, as well as abroad in cities like Berlin, Barcelona, London etc. but we’ve never really thought about Australia. Looking into it more, Australia seems like it could be pretty interesting! Melbourne has a cool vibe - it seems to have a decent big city feel with good access to a bunch of different kinds of nature, though I could live anywhere in Australia or New Zealand - Canva allows remote work but wants this team to all be in nearby time zones. I know there’s also a pretty high COL, housing is difficult to find, and it’s very isolated from the rest of the world, which raises some concerns but are things I could likely deal with. It would also likely be a super stressful move. Canva has a GREAT relocation package, but the thought of moving myself, my partner, my dog and her cat to the other side of the world is pretty daunting. I’d also need to support my partner for the first few months while she finds a job (she works for a USA only company but also hates it, she’s 100% down to move and find something else but it will still be difficult). Most of my long-time friends have moved out of Dallas already, so I’m not too worried about leaving the city or people behind much. So overall, it seems like a cool, interesting life opportunity that could be pretty difficult but potentially super fulfilling! Would love to hear from people who’ve made similar moves in the past, or who might live in Australia and could provide me an idea of what the living and work scene there is like. #expats #tech #australia
DO IT! If you hate it, you can always come back.. you won't know until you give it a try. Especially because you don't have a lot of long term friends here in Dallas. Let us know how it goes.
LISTEN TO THIS MAN. You will never get a better chance to do this. You don't have kids and you will look back and regret not taking this opportunity. Take it and remember to embrace all parts of the experience! Congrats, bro!
Oh and you could live in Bali and shuttle back and forth!
Why not take a trip down there to check out for yourself. 2 weeks spent in Australia would give you a decent idea of the lifestyle. Melbourne and Sydney are very cosmopolitan but outrageous COL compared to what you earn and compared to Texas. same with taxes. But you get exciting lifestyle. So yolo.
Are you a US citizen? Then for sure, try it out. If it works great, if it doesn't you can always come back.
Yes, do it!
Australia is great. I’m from the US but moved to Australia years ago. If you love walkable cities, I highly recommend Melbourne. I think the main two issues you might find is that if you decide you want to earn more money, there are much better job opportunities in the US. But you could always find a job in the future that pays for relocation back to the US. If your partner isn’t in tech, chances are she would be paid more in Australia. Baristas alone can make 100k aud a year with super. So financially it might balance out, depending on her career. The other issue is you might love it there and not want to leave :) it can be tough being so far from friends and family. Yearly trips home helps a lot.
As someone who moved from Australia to US, I’d say you should go and explore. You would find better WLB, less crowded and safer cities, very chill vibe, great food and very multicultural. However, there are less opportunities compared to US in tech but the one you got seems a great. Canva has been one company I would try to work for if I was there. Best of luck for the move if you decide to.
Hi op, I've been watching Canva for long, and have a question, do they sponsor working Visa at this point?
Hey there - sorry for the late reply. They do as far as I can tell! The relocation package seems very comprehensive and the job is specifically targeted toward people who would relocate to Australia.
Absolutely! Australia is significantly better than US, and you will get it. I’ve been working in both countries, but settled down in Sydney
I'm a US citizen living in Australia. I've lived in many countries and Australia is my favourite by far. I also work at Canva and very much enjoy working here. I spent years at Google, which I enjoyed, but I feel like it's easier to have impact at Canva because we're smaller and focused on a single product. I recommend both.

Sounds like an exciting opportunity. Do it, if it doesn’t work out you could always move back to the states. YOLO!
