Is Coinbase better than FAANG for SWE?

Coinbase comp remote to Minneapolis: $118K base $50K stocks $6K target annual bonus Is Coinbase > FAANG for new grad? It seems like a spectacular opportunity but where does it stand in relation to FAANG. #newgrad #coinbase #faang

It's actually much lower than faang but you didn't give that option

Google izDD87 Mar 12, 2022

True

IBM pickmyjob OP Mar 12, 2022

Why?

Uber hfgsgwywh Mar 12, 2022

Remote in Minneapolis, FAANG will lower your comp. So this may be better

Coinbase comp remote to HCOL is $139K for new grad. So they reduced it by like $20K

For remote MCOL that's pretty good but other companies give 140k w/ sign on. FAANG seems reluctant to start new grad remote so it depends, they would pay more but you couldn't be remote.

IBM pickmyjob OP Mar 12, 2022

$140K base remote to MCOL? I think you're full of it lol

Think what you want. I know a new grad who got an offer at a chat app for that much 🤷‍♂️

CB is good for their TC nothing else even compares to FAANG

Amazon gjfsdfh Mar 12, 2022

Isn’t TC everything. What else is there to compare.

Visa battery100 Mar 12, 2022

What kind of nothing else we talking about?

LinkedIn vLjO13 Mar 12, 2022

Why isn’t much lower than FAANG an option? The comp is good but the crypto space is not a good place to be long term.

Lmao spewing bs like no tomorrow

Thanks Albertsons for encouragement.

It is much better from what my friends say. Talent at Coinbase blows FAANG out of the water. Says they have the smartest people hes ever worked with. Super high hiring bar, not a place for rest and vest. Projects are way more interesting and impactful. Fast promo and incredible TC

Meta hiremepliz Mar 12, 2022

Is their hiring bar really high? I got an offer from them and now it looks like i feel i have to perform really well on the job 😂

Having worked for two FAANG before, I’d say it’s comparable with some things better some things worse. The main thing it has in common with FAANG is that there’s actually a wide variety of work, though the trading platform is the only one investors really care about right now. Each FAANG has their own underlying selling point that all their products are based around, coinbase’s would be blockchain. Whether that is successful in the end, only time will tell. I think that tech is going to change the tech landscape in the future and hopefully Coinbase will position itself well. As for the talent there, I’d say the overall average is better but there’s fewer on the very high side and fewer on the low side. On the bad side, there’s a lot organizationally/company-wise that’s lacking. You can definitely tell it’s only recently IPO’d and there’s additional restrictions and security concerns due to being a trading platform. While there is a variety of stuff to work on and it’s easier to have a large impact, there’s not a lot of “cool” work going on yet. Right now it’s still trying to set up the foundations of a large company.

depending on your interests/goals it can be slightly better/worse than FNG. For new grad - i would say only a couple better companies if you care about career development and learning. You can get promo’d pretty quick and each promo comes with big pay bump as we pay the same across a level. For example, new grad ic3 (200k+) -> ~1yr ic4 (260k+) -> another 2-3yrs ic5 (400k+). Really good perf incentives (1.5-2x stock). Solid benefits and lot of extra cash on top of every pay check (~6k/yr extra cash). WLB won’t be as good as google but comparable to FB. But at least we have guaranteed 4 weeks off as a company this year. For your work, can be a miss based on your team (most teams don’t work directly with the blockchain) but if you are proactive/honest about your goals/desires during team matching should be fine. Talent used to be much better but degraded slightly recently as we try to hire more to scale (too many amazon hires) . Leadership acknowledged this and are making changes to make sure we are hiring right talent. But the biggest perk of all is being a remote first company (although you can still go to our many offices/get access to all wework locations). Its def better than the 2 AA’s though. This is just my perspective having worked at a couple of the FAANGs.

Meta hiremepliz Mar 12, 2022

Its encouraging that to know that wlb is comparable with FB haha… looks like i can adapt 😛… i heard the infra is really bad tho… what do you think?

Coinbase zasss Mar 12, 2022

🤪 yeah its bad. We are investing heavily into it but its going to be a bit before it gets good. Maybe you can join infra and make it better. Def really good promo possibilities in infra if you make useful tooling
