I'm a recent college grad, first job as a software engineer. The hype around Data Science makes me feel there might be more interesting work + more money into it. Is it right? Should I start prepping for DS roles? Also we can get into DS roles with just a bachelor's, right? EDIT: I guess MLE is the role I'm thinking about. Anyone having some idea as to the prerequisites for this role or some advice, please comment
They are paid *less*
So SWE is a better option?
Yes, or MLE = SWE in ML
Mle is better I hear. I hear complaints from data scientists that most of their work is data cleaning in excel or sql or web scraping and writing python scripts to create data in the first place. The cool part is a very minute part of the entire process apparently
Do you have any idea what the prerequisites of a MLE role? Research papers count?
Research papers are not required. People still use Excel with all the big data around?
There’s 20x+ SWE roles to DS. If you don’t have a PhD then stick with SWE/data engineer
Grass isn’t always greener on other side. If you like coding and engineering work then you will be rudely disappointed. I went SWE from DS for this reason. MLE May be happy medium for u.
Just realized OP is SWE at Uber...as first role out if college.....I would not move
Any particular reason why?
