Considering everyone is joining this bandwagon, do you guys think this will still be the hot field in upcoming years? Is it wise to switch career in this filed after working for 5+ years in tech sales and marketing?
TC?
I think it's a hot field but data scientists seem to be getting paid less than software engineers. I don't know why.
Because most of the time data scientists don't produce anything substantial. If anything, it is usually an incremental gain on top of what was already built by swe.
It takes a unique set of skills, experience, and creativity to become a really impactful DS. The ones that have it can write there own ticket.
I don't think it'll be hot for long. Real world value from DS is hard to deliver in industries outside of the SV tech scene. Much like the NoSQL/Big Data trends were on a hype curve, so to is DS.
Demand for DS that focuses on extracting real business value will continue to grow inside and outside of SV. Maybe it will be called something else, but data insight that adds value to a company will probably not go out of style.
Hadoop and big data are the current bee's knees.
As a specialist in this space, I partly agree. The bar for data scientist is laughably low compared to being a respectable distributed systems/big data specialist. While I am in very high demand, finding companies that I want to work at on projects I like that use nearly all my skills and pay well has been challenging.
👆Could be the SV bubble. Every field is in demand in the valley.
