Stock aside, is Dropbox a good company? Why is it’s blind rating so different from the Glassdoor rating? I see tons of FAANG going to Dropbox, anyone can chime in on how it’s like? Blind tax: TC 280k, yoe 5 #dropbox #dropboxcompany
Glassdoor is known for removing reviews on litigious companies and you will often notice ridiculous ceo approval ratings. Also, HR in many companies will flood reviews with fake comments with things like “Cons: None that I can think of” and “keep doing what you’re doing!”
This is not true. It’s impossible to get a review removed unless it is defamatory or mentions a person directly. Or if it’s literally written about a different company like on accident. Would love to know where you got this info.
I just recently joined so maybe take this with a grain of salt because I don't know enough yet. Biggest issues are product offerings (which is reflected by stock price IMO). Outside of being a Google Drive clone most people don't know why they would use us. That being said I was surprised to hear how many large enterprise and small business users we have that really enjoy our products and can't change because of differentiated features. On the upside the company is profitable and has a ton of cash. At the very least it's currently a solid business, maybe no longer high growth, and who knows what the long term holds. Things I love: Engineering org is great with tons of large hard problems and yet things work reasonably well. Huge focus on keeping employees happy. Virtual first, great benefits (Company wide 3 day weekend every month, unlimited PTO that people actually use, $7k stipend you can spend on anything except alcohol), great pay, great WLB (can be team dependent I hear... new product teams sound faster paced). They offered me more than Google so it was a no brainer for me. TC $370k IC3, Tier 2 location (Non SF Metro)
Oh also ad tech is cancer for society. File storage may be boring but it's an honest living.
Can u share which team (or bigger team) u belong to?
Genuine question: who still uses dropbox? I feel like its old tech and software that noone uses anymore. If the TC is good, then join. Otherwise...
It’s still no. 2 most popular cloud storage after Google
It’s mainly for small businesses and creative professionals.
I love it here though I’m sure there are some bad teams out there as well. Thing I love: people are great to work with, WLB is amazing, pay is great, WFH, great benefits, unlimited PTO that people actually use, and overall the company seems focused on keeping employees happy. This is probably more team dependent, but I think we’re working on tons of interesting and challenging projects. The bad: products outside of core haven’t done well in the past. Also seems like leadership direction wasn’t super clear. I’m hopeful for the future with some of our new products, but tbh it doesn’t really matter to me. Even with just core, the company is profitable with a ton of cash. So at worst, it’s a stable company where you get paid and treated super well. At best, some of the new products explode in growth. Either way you can find a team with interesting projects that’ll help your career growth. TC 350k Tier 2 location
The WLB ratings are high and take a look at levels.fyi. The TC is Dropbox is extremely competitive. The downside might be stock growth, but they sure give you a lot of stock.
It’s a good company when you disregard the stock. Profitable with a solid product and a consistent client base. I’ve worked at some FAANGs and this is probably my second-favorite company work wise (Google is hard to beat IMO if you don’t mind being “too smart” for the easy problems 80% of SWEs get—just means good WLB) Here there are challenging problems but still good WLB. Of the FAANGs I worked at, I’d only leave here to boomerang for Google, and only if they paid comparably or more and let me be remote. (More likely it would be a downlevel and pay decrease to go back, plus tied to an office; IC3 here vs L4 there is like a 100k difference)
Other companies I’d consider jumping for are basically Twitter (when I did my last interview loop, twitter TC and DBX TC were comparable and wlb seemed the same, but the team here seemed more interesting) and Netflix (haven’t experienced, but every Netflixer I’ve heard from is happy there), but I’m not planning any switches for now. So tl;dr yeah, would recommend. Maybe one day the stock will be back up and you could have “bought the dip” in RSUs
If u work at Dropbox for sometimes, you would still only be considered at L4? Or L5 depending on your interview results?
It’s good WLB, stable but super boring product, and good comp and benefits. It’s also not an ethical nightmare like most companies that pay around the same. If you’re looking to chill, maybe work on side projects or spend more time doing non-work stuff, it’s a great company. If you’re looking for something high growth or a place you can build a ton of innovate stuff and pad your resume, look elsewhere.
Well good WLB usually translate into slower career growth since u don’t go through as much project.
I don’t really agree with that sentiment OP. Career growth is more strongly correlated with impact and scope of work rather than hours worked. If you can find the right team and be efficient with your time, you can have good WLB and still grow your career. Another way to look at it is that good WLB gives you more time to read tech blogs, read books of soft skills, work on side projects, etc to get even more growth. Working more hours could just mean more time doing grunt work which is high stress and low reward (with career growth)
Everyone's covered most of the things here but here's something else to consider: Dropbox runs a lot of its own infra, more so than most other companies its size. We run our own data centers, edge networking and have a bunch of infra/platform teams plus the usual product teams. We are also a remote company. This means at least in theory Dropboxers can easily try out a new type of work if they're bored with their current team. No geographical constraints and plenty of work to choose from. I used to work in a backend product role but I wanted to try out something more low level. The transfer process was quick and easy - no interviewing involved other than a few convos with the manager.
+1 to everyone on WLB. I came from FAANG and this is SO much better for my mental health. People and culture are awesome. Remote work, company pto days, unlimited pto (and people actually take it.) Comp is not top in tech but it is competitive and to me worth it when you factor in the WLB. I don’t have a sense of complete dread every Sunday evening going in to work the next day.
Just ask yourself if the average joe has heard of any of their numerous product launches other than storage
why would the average Joe know about B2B products
Lmao they have launched several failed consumer apps. Your reply is proving my point. Ever heard of Dropbox Carousel?
