Google Brass set 2023 as a deadline to beat Amazon and Microsoft in cloud. I don't think they will beat Amazon anytime soon. Are they going to shut down if they don't beat Amazon? https://www.theinformation.com/articles/google-brass-set-2023-as-deadline-to-beat-amazon-microsoft-in-cloud?pu=hackernewsyw3xln&utm_source=hackernews&utm_medium=unlock
This is terrific news for Microsoft. What enterprise is going to sign up for GCP now? They need to either to commit to keep running it or just kill it now.
Of course not, their ML stuff is the best in the biz as far as cloud services go
How many big companies need ML for near future? Absolutely no way they beat aws nor azure in a few years
How many tech companies really need advanced ML?
Even as solid as GCP's ML and MS' analytics offerings in Azure, they will not beat out AWS due to the sheer amount of different services AWS have to offer (none of them come close). All around, AWS is the most solid platform and has been for a very long time. Cloud platforms need broad reach, not segmented and silo'd offerings that only a select number of companies can/will use. With that said, highly doubt they will shut down GCP as a whole. Look at how shitty OCI is and its been kicking for 5+ years now lol. Been a cloud engineer and cloud architect for almost 5 years now (and infra for 8+) with all the big platforms, seen all of them have their strengths and weaknesses.
I think your analysis is spot on. But google has been known to scrap businesses that were not a complete failure but failed to hit internal targets. Still gcp seems too big to scrap just because it missed some goalposts
I think you misread the article. It says top 2, not market leader so it "just" has to beat azure. GCP likes to trump its 8 bill run rate or whatever it is now but only profit matters. I don't think it will be top 2. I wouldn't join gcp
GCP’s marketshare is super inflated by free compute credits they give to pretty much anyone and everyone. If they cut those credits, they’re done.
AWS has free tier (small compute t2.micro nodes) and Azure also has free compute credits.
Free tier is different than compute credits. You have very large companies in GCP that are running on free compute credits to keep them there. Very large entities do no run on free tiers or free credits at Azure and AWS
Who on their leadership team is capable of outwitting Daddy Bezos and S Nutella? They can forget about it right now.
Given Google’s track records of dropping good products like hot potatoes, I was always afraid they will shut down GCP when I started using it. The fact that they even discussed leaving the market is insane. The focus should be on customers, better product management and strategy, not whether they’re 3rd in numbers.
Didn’t they just hire a fuckton of sales people? Odd to undercut them.
I believe they will beat Amazon
Based on...?
MSFT will, GCP not
