Based on my observation on LinkedIn, I see too many Staff and Sr. Staff folks who work at Google vs if you compare with other companies like Meta, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Airbnb, etc. I thought Sr. SWE is Terminal at Google, but looks like Staff is the terminal at Google? Can someone throw some light on this observation - have you observed the same or not? #tech #staff #promotion
even mid SWE is terminal don’t have to go Sr
Expected terminal isn't even senior, it's just L4. Changed a few years ago.
Promo from L4 -> L5 is easy and it’s very much possible. L5 -> L6 is almost impossible to promo. There’s a possibility but you need a really really strong manager and VP to approve the promo. Takes about 3-4yrs on avg if you’re doing the right things

The end of Backdoor Roth?!
Promoting? No External hire? Yes It’s really hard to get internally promoted to L5 at Google because you need to get a lot of things right.
Not L5, he is saying staff and sr staff which are L6/L7
My bad. I mistyped it. The point still stands
