I have a return offer to go back to Google but I've been reading a lot about very aggressive cost cutting and I'm having second thoughts. I also read promo and career growth seems to be very slow but heard good things about Ads PA which my return offer is for. I have better offers but probably with worse WLB and less interesting products. Google offer: 131/175 + 50k signon in HCOL. This offer is after negotiation and it matches the first year of the competing offer but drops in the following years.
Not at goog, but wonder if fast promo could be achieved with strong work ethic. You'd get promoted faster @ FB but you'd have to work harder. Well, what if you just work hard @ Goog instead of resting & vesting?
Highly depends on the manager. Google's perf system requires managers to fight aggressively for fast promos.
Yeah it's hard to know. Seems like promo raises would still be lower than other companies but I'm not sure. Read around that promo is more tenure based but not sure how true that is.
As a new grad I'd take it. It's a good offer and looks great on resume, but your analysis is very accurate for longer term so keep an eye out without falling into the trap of waiting for promo after promo which would slow you down in the long term.
No.
I wouldn't recommend google to new grads generally unless you really are concerned about working hard at another company. Get some experience at a place where they use open source. Google will be here later.
Definitely not.
Growth at Google sucks. It's far more tenure based than anywhere else in the industry. Good news is they pay well and you'll learn how to do engineering correctly. It's no joke Google is 5-10 years ahead of th3 curve with most engineering practices. Additionally, Google has curated a strong enough brand that nobody will ever question your credentials/ability etc. So best advice is to join Google for 2 years then jump somewhere else
Can you elaborate on the "Google is 5-10 years ahead with most engineering practices"? I'm a new grad as well and curious as to how Google maintains good code practices.
Google is still solid but there’s a lot of companies a tier above for new grads nowadays. Where are your other offers at?
2 years at google will get you senior roles at most places.
No
Ads is a good PA for growths. What's the alternative offer?
Stripe and Citadel are the alternatives
I heard the engineering practice is bad at Citadel, not good for NG. You ca pick between Stripe and Google.
