I'm currently a FTE at LinkedIn, looking for a new opportunity, and IG is my dream company. I just got an offer for Meta Contractor (not IG but Facebook Commerce) for 200k ($98/hr), 3 months to start, can extend to 2 years max, can convert to full-time whenever there's headcount. This could give me a foot in the door to IG which is my dream company, but is FTE to Contractor a downgrade? I'm also technically taking a paycut of 10k but they said 200k is the max range TC: 210k #meta #instagram #linkedin
Big Noooooo
100% downgrade
I would take it, especially if you think it could benefit you later on. I’m in the same position, and depending on how you look at it, you’re making a big gamble to leave a stable FTE position for a contract role knowing that you may be laid off first or fail to convert. I would take it if it has a significant increase in responsibilities or pay (similar to my position), or if the benefits are worth it, especially if you can get repeat business. Current TC: 62K New TC: $44/hr
Do both
actually love this idea lol, 9-3pm: LI (im nyc team) 3-9pm: FB (cali team)
Now to repay me for this idea, get me hired as contractor too!
Wait it out, they will open positions and use that to get into IG if that is still your dream. I did a somewhat similar mistake.. where I went from SDM to take first role offered in Amazon.. it took me 2.5 years and 2 switches to make to back the the SDM role..
I’ve learned to avoid being a contractor now at all costs. This is coming from someone who’s done more contract work than ft
What did you dislike about it the most?
They don’t care about you or your career trajectory. It can get really frustrating. You won’t learn as much but there’s a good chance the job will be pretty chill. Like you won’t do a whole lot but you won’t learn a whole lot
It’s both a downgrade and a stepping stone. Question for you is: Think a downgrade is worth it in the long run?
It's not a stepping stone. It's a way to never get a FT job again. Not a smart thing.
Depends on the details of the contract. Some gives you the chance to convert.
No benefits for contractors
A contractor is the first to go when any belt tightening happens
Well the contractors were actually left alone in the November layoffs.
Many contracts were subsequently cut in jan.
