Is Networking software development a dead-end job?

Will it be around for long? Will future be about apps and data analyics? #tech #cisco #swe #networkengineer

Look at the pay to experience ratio If it is getting lower, then it means it's going to a dead end job. Do you see college kids who build apps making more than a network engineer with 10yoe? If so then network eng is dying.

Nokia ras-al-gul Jul 15, 2020

Flawed argument... Just because some career choice doesn't have hight salaries doesn't mean those career options are dying. With that logic all mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, civil engineer etc etc should consider their profession as dying because some college kid build app and earn 200k in 2 yoe....

Cisco _Jane_Doe_ Jul 16, 2020

Don’t take dead literally. Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering jobs are already commoditized. Meaning, they are able to find lot of them and hence pay is low.

If you are a really skilled Network engineer, then there's a huge market. If you're a mediocre NWE, it's better to be a mediocre SWE.

Microsoft edzt78 Jul 14, 2020

It’s not dead end but it’s morphed itself into cloud infra engineering. Kubernetes + AWS, Azure and GCP networking with a good bit of systems engineering knowledge is the new network engineering job. What you know is still relevant, but how you use it has changed.

Cisco xyha55 Jul 15, 2020

Infra and networking are never the same infra encompass a lot more than networking Engineering

Cisco dadb84 Jul 16, 2020

Totally agree with the answer here ! The knowledge is same and has to be applied in cloud context nowadays

Ciena ORdG16 Jul 15, 2020

Software defined networking and networking function virtualization are growing quickly, so no.

Cisco ByeCisco Jul 15, 2020

Growing! It’s TAM (targeted addressable market) is already saturated may be 1b more. Any SaaS companies do 1b in a yr!!

Cisco _Jane_Doe_ Jul 16, 2020

TAM is Total

Networking software development will not be narrowed to only those with in-depth networking knowledge anymore. Cloud and container developments has made it easy to understand the top level nuances of networking as Microsoft mentioned above. Sole network engineering jobs are now being marketed or labeled as cloud engineering jobs. Network SW development ones are being pushed into infra development. Skills are useful with ramping on newer trends. It's been the same throughout my career.

No way SDN is growing. Would you instead do Crud work lol!

Blue Danube whistler7 Jul 15, 2020

Just curious. What makes you say SDN is not growing?

Networking will be cheap. Companies don’t make money’s because they have good networks. It’s just an expense for them. I’m moving to AI field.

ViaSat LyUh25 Jul 20, 2020

service providers sure do. Networks are constantly changing, look at StarLink and 5G. Networking is like plumbing, essential.

F5 Networks MnLl62 Jul 15, 2020

You can always move to a cloud provider

AT&T lSYj72 Jul 15, 2020

Job market is very small. All public clouds already have small army of network engineers. It’s almost impossible to make career

F5 Networks MnLl62 Jul 15, 2020

Hmm based on the title I believed op was taking about software dev of networking equipment not network engineering

Cisco th!k@ Jul 15, 2020

Just look at the stock growth of CSCO vs the app companies in the last 2 years. That shows where the value is.
