How are you guys going to "double the hc this year" if you don't keep up the pay with other folks like Wish, Google, Facebook, Doordash, Uber or etc that are increasing their presence in Toronto? I like the vibe there but the pay is just so bad... please correct me if I am wrong. TC $310KCAD, Google L4 (=L5 in Shopify according to level.fyi) #shopify
Yes, a new comp framework coming out in July
Nice. Thanks for the info. Looking forward to this.
I'm prepping for my final interview at an L6, if I am able to get an offer do you think the TC would fall into this new framework?
Shopify pays terribly less for the amount of work there is. One of the reason I wouldn’t join it
This. They were offering me 40k less than competing offers in Toronto. But then again, Toronto salaries are still quite low on average
OP does your TC include stock appreciation? How does Shopify L5 comp compare to your $310k?
It doesn't matter if it includes or not. Shopify L5 comp is still way lower.
One of my friend got a senior offer yesterday, after negotiating (his initial offer was very low) 160k + 200k stocks (over 3yrs) + 10k flex perk (basically can be used on vacations, etc) TC ~240k Cad(excluding flex perk)
Cad?
Yes final tc in CAD
I would love to join the shopify. They have this Apprentice program to learn/connect /to get an edge in. I am not commenting on pay scale as I have yet not employed with them. Thanks
not sure if the new comp framework will change anything tbh. many people have left bc most offers for same role are paying ~ 30% more
I think Canada TC is improving, started this year IC4, 320K. With stock appreciation, almost 370K. All in CAD.
Shopify or NVIDIA?
I don't know where you guys are getting these crazy inflated numbers from. Top of AMZN SDE 2 band in Toronto is 220k CAD, and you need completing offers before they offer you that. Bottom of SDE 2 band is 160k CAD. Google Waterloo starting L4 offer is ~195k, and again, you need competing offers to go higher than that. Sure startups pay more a tad more, but their stock is not stable (and some have crazy RSU policies), and therefore they are paying more because there is more risk.
This was provably true 5 years ago. I got a 310k SDE2 offer earlier this year from Amazon . Sucks I have to reject, they can’t even match my current pay. But yeah Google Waterloo pays 🥜, got an offer from them several years ago for L4, base was 98k.
I have the same question to Amazon Toronto
why do you even care about amazon lol? Culture is bad and pay is bad...
Hope that Toronto salary increases as a whole. Includes Amazon & other old Toronto offices like okta
