Is Sprint methodology stupid?

On my previous team, we didn't do Sprint. Our model was simply that we work on a task until complete and then move on to the next task. I feel like Sprint means timeboxing a bundle of tasks. This creates tech debt to the moon.

It’s stupid but I can’t think of anything better

Only works for dumb project that doesn’t have many uncertainties. For any innovative or real work, this is stupid as f

I agree with this. Recently even data science teams are forced to do sprints!

True Sprint/Agile is awesome. Never work more than 40 hours a week. Give developers the basics and let them dictate how it is done, let them set their own rate. No deadlines. You just ship what is ready. No burnout, rapid development, etc. Shoehorning Sprint/Agile into Waterfall and calling it Sprint/Agile is where all the problems happened.

I experienced real agile once. Self lead, no PM. Is the waterfall/micromanagement disguised as scrum/agile lead by PMs that is killing the industry. But the PMs are needed cuz the managers can’t do or comprehend the work of the engineers anymore. Long gone are the days where you used to respect and get inspired by the manager cuz they were the best at the job.

I agree. Pure, authentic agile is amazing when done with a competent product owner who can actually make decisions. I've only experienced it once. Everywhere else is just waterfall split into 2 week segments and is awful.

A terrible process designed for obvious tasks. Mainly fit for contractors or ops works.

For projects or teams that have to deal with uncertainties or don't have full control over their backlog, it doesn't work. It falls apart quickly. Team velocity looks like shit, the backlog can't be managed, the meetings are tedious and repetitive and everybody gets frustrated. You have lunatics who treat it like religion, everything has to be done exactly by the book or it's blasphemy and they refuse to work and everything turns into crazy discussions about "why aren't we doing agile correctly?"

Cisco EWffeπ25 Nov 16, 2023

No. You just have a shitty PO/PM for your team. And a shitty manager too.
