Is WGU a reputable online school for tech degree?

I am asking for a friend in the Seattle area. She works full time and wants to get her BS in Cloud and Systems Administration from Western Governors University. The other option was to go to UW but she doesn’t think she has time to do in person classes. She’s asking because her dream company to work for is Netflix and wants to make sure her degree is reputable enough for her to get an interview there. I’ve never heard of this school myself. Any advice?

Yes WGU is an excellent school. I have known many people that have gone to the school and have come out with great jobs. WGU is actually lauded by the companies because the people with degrees from there are actually some of the best workers they have.

Netflix doesn't hire juniors afaik & your friend should really ask herself whether some cheap online IT school on her resume will change that or if that school is even able to teach her the skills necessary to work there. Besides, how many sysadmins (in the traditional sense) does Netflix even employ? Their engineering culture seems pretty strong, I doubt they need much support staff for configuration and monitoring.

She has a full time engineer job, she’s not a jr. I’m not sure why she wants to pick the cloud major however, doesn’t seem to relate to what she wants to do. She wants to be a video algorithm engineer.

Why would she get that degree from an online school with a more than dubious reputation then?

I'm currently attending WGU to pick up some biz classes to complement my previous education and experience. So far, I've been happy with the school, and I've learned a fair amount. They are accredited by 4 different accreditation outfits, and you can transfer those credits to elsewhere. The classes have been decent, and they do a good job of providing decent education while staying out of the way of your day job. I have no complaints, and the price is right.

More accreditations are worse, not better.

I’m an autodidact. Not sure I will ever pass an interview for a FANG, but it’s not a big deal. Please don’t spend money on a tech degree. The best education is via Twitter and IRC.

> Please don’t spend money on a tech degree. The best education is via Twitter and IRC. lol. You just said your career prospects are limited because you don't have a degree, how are you in a position to give advice? Spending two years on top of my bachelor's for a master's degree tripled my income (and got me into a FANG), but what do I know…

Your degree gave you the ability to generate straw man arguments? Nice payoff there. My career options are limited because I let my coding skills suffer after having a child and I’m neuroatypical. My TC is just north of 300k and I live on the beach so I’m OK with that.

Is this a joke? Who let the scam school sales people on Blind? Don’t go to that trash school. “The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Inspector General has released the results of a much anticipated high-stakes audit of Western Governors University, with negative findings that could threaten the large online university and, more broadly, the growing field of competency-based education. Citing concerns about an inadequate faculty role -- which the competency-based university contests -- the inspector general called for the department to make WGU pay back at least $713 million in federal financial aid. The final audit report, issued today, also said the nonprofit university, which enrolls 83,000 students, should be ineligible to receive any more federal aid payments.” https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2017/09/22/education-depts-inspector-general-calls-western-governors-repay-713-million-federal

Honest question I’m asking for my friend who can’t get on Blind because she works at a scrub company right now. Not sure what the first poster is about though...Thanks for the article.

Psst you and I both work for scrub companies too.

WGU is a terrific school with a rigorous curriculum. The IG Report relied an antiquated models of distance education. Literally there were people on the review team who thought online education was the same a correspondence course. It is being reviewed.
