My significant other has started a certification course on Coursera for a Sales Development Representative certificate. She has no sales experience or any college. Is this enough to get a job?
If I were trying to do this, my path would be: -apply at companies that you want to ultimately sell their product, but for positions you are currently qualified for -do a good job, demonstrate strong soft skills that translate into sales and also technical knowledge of the service/product of the company you work for -put it into your development plan to work on the sales side of the business and start shadowing reps/working with them -network with the sales folks and their leadership and express a desire to get into sales This way you are building up your knowledge and skills, building a network of people and ultimately when there is an opportunity for an associate or entry level sales role, you will be on their mind. The certificate can teach concepts, but that’s it. Learn by doing is the best way to succeed imo.
Also just want to note that the most successful sales people I know didn’t even go to college. One guy is a high school drop-out. Some folks just have a knack for it. Perhaps your SO does as well and can quickly get into a role if they start at one of the companies they’d like to sell for in another position.
Why bother doing all the other stuff? It sounds like this will be her first job so she’s not qualified for other positions. BDR sales roles are the most friendly for entry-level folks with no experience.
The certificate might help but companies use college GPA / experience as an indicator for people with no work experience. For example Oracle sales academy hires hundreds of new grads every year but you need a minimum GPA. The good news is, BDR positions are the easiest to get for someone with 0 experience. She’d probably have to take a BDR job with a subpar company, get the title and some months of experience, and move to a better place.
Depends on the company/hiring manager. I’ve built SDR teams with no degree and with. It’s all up to the hiring manager. If you go the Sales Cert route, try to find an organization that has a job placement program that comes with the cost of your cert. Good luck!

I think it will depend more on the connections she is able to make in order to land the job. I got my sdr role reaching out to people on LinkedIn, the certificate will undoubtedly help
