Hi everyone -- I could use some advice. I just completed my Masters in AI, and I’ve been offered a fully-funded research assistantship on my professor’s PhD team -- the focus would be topics in Trustworthy AI. This opportunity would cover my tuition, but the stipend is minimal, so I won't earn a significant income for the next three years. I wouldn’t intend to remain in academia after completing the Ph.D. program (although I would still like to focus on trustworthy/responsible AI), so I’m wondering whether a Ph.D. will enhance my employability and qualifications, and if the long-term financial benefits outweigh the initial years of limited income. I've noticed many job postings require either several years of industry experience (which I'm unsure how to gain without first having a job) or a Ph.D -- I might be searching in the wrong areas, but that's my current observation. I’d be grateful for any insights you have to offer -- thank you! #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #MachineLearning #DataScience #Education #Masters #Doctorate #PhD #Jobs #Career #Advice #Research #Salaries #TrustworthyAI #Ethics #Google #Amazon #Microsoft #Facebook #Apple
Yes
Is there a particular job you want that requires a PhD? Do you really enjoy / love the research topic?
Yes
Yes
No, degree is trash
Say more?
Yes it can be worth it. But dude, getting publications on top conferences is going to make you cry
Confused - what do you mean by that? The process to get publications is difficult?
No. the opportunity cost of 4-12 years of lost wages for phd + postdoc is not worth it. Just start working and get online MS.
it would be 3 years
Yeah, so the cost is ~1/2 million in lost wages. I know Amazon hired a phd with 10 years of research as an L4 sde 1.
If you don't plan to stay in academia then why would you want to do it? You need to ask and answer yourself to figure out. Personally I don't think it will help much in a career outside of academia but if you enjoy it or would regret not doing it then you have your answer
This. Worst case is drop out after a year or half a year into your PhD if you do not like research. Having a PhD isn’t the glamorous for the most part.
Get PhD from Europe
PhD is usually a resident program . You can’t do it online
And why can't a person relocate?
