Is an MBA worth it?

Hello everyone, I was wondering how many Blind users recommend an MBA. I see both sides of the argument and wanted to just run a poll myself! Feel free to comment on your reason behind your choice.

I’d add yes if it’s company sponsored. If you are paying, the ROI is likely negative especially given opportunity cost. Even better if sponsored and it’s a professional program so you are still getting salary.

Are you Swe? What is the value did u find?

Do you want to get into management? Then yes. It’s ah investment though and you may not see the fruits immediately but over a Period of time. Certainly worth it if you get into one of the M7.

It’s worth it if you’re climbing the ladder in the finance/business section. Also valued in VC. For the average tech/engineer who wants to get into management, not really worth it.

This entirely depends on what you're doing now and what you want to do after If you want to move to banking/consulting from wherever, sure If you're an eng looking to somehow increase your TC, no If you're non-tech and hoping to move to strategy/PM/ops/mktg/finance then sure If you can get it sponsored, sure Depending on what you want to do, is it top 3/7/15? Sure

Very nice answer. I am SWE. Does MBA help if I want to stick to tech ladder (L5 -> L6 -> Principal/Fellow), like MBA has leadership, communication courses? Does MBA help for path SDM -> Director -> VP -> CxO?

Its is only if you do it from M7

It depends. As others said, if your company is paying it's a totally different evaluation (more on if you want to take on part time school while working). If you're paying for it, it's important to ask yourself "what do I think the benefit is that this is providing me" and then see if it's accurate. I had a friend consider it because they thought it would help give them a boost but in reality they had already surpassed comp + position from what MBAs typically get. On the other hand if you're in one role / company and want to make a move to a different role / company where an MBA can help make that happen, it might be worth it. You should ask yourself though if there are other ways you could make that move yourself independent of an MBA as well. There are many reasons to get on or not to get one, for me it's always been about making sure that when someone makes that choice they understand why they want to do it and that their expectations match reality.

I come from tech background and always wanted to do it. I never wanted to put $ ROI. I did it for personal growth and wanted to learn something new. I would say I enjoyed it a lot and would do it again if $$ wasn’t a concern. I spent $150K of my own. It was really a refreshing experience. Duke MBA

Microsoft QuidBroQuo Feb 14, 2020

Damn 150k is a lot

The crazy part was not money but how intense the program was. Imagine someone who worked on developing software for 15 years and now taking accounting exam that could last for almost 8 hours that involved pages of financial statements. The best classes I took were corporate finance, venture capital and private equity, decision models, etc. It was a different world.

Need to get into top 10 and find the 1 year program. 2 year is too much on opportunity cost and tuition. Or go for exec MBA if you have the experience.
