Trying to get out of retail, I know shocking not a retail worker here on blind, the horrorš I am trying to transition to a corporate role, specifically employee experience and people operations NOT HR. I have 5 years in People Ops and 14+ years in Sales. Any help or advice around transitioning would be appreciated. Iām grateful to have worked for Apple but my experience with Apple has not been great. My brief situation: I take care of my elderly parents and a brother with Autism. I have zero work life balance or consistency in schedule to cook clean and take care of my family. TC š© #tech #Meta #Google #Microsoft #Airbnb #Spotify #Amazon

Kudos to your sense of responsibility in taking care of your sibling and elderly patients. There are things that money cannot buy and happiness from non material things is one of them. Coming to the question, the 14yrs you have in sales would count as transferable skills. The key thing would be to potray it meaningfully on a resume. Hire a professional resume writer and get a resume done targetting people ops roles. Network hard using Linkedin and try for internships. The internship will be the foot in the door for you to transition across domains. If you can squeeze a few additional hours in a day , use udemy or coursera to upskill. If you can afford it take courses in your local university that are suited for working professionals. If there are certifications pursue them. Nothing is impossible and with the right amount of perseverance you can move across domains.
Thank you so much for taking the time and sharing helpful advice. I have tried a resume writer but havenāt gotten anywhere with that as of yet. I was informed by the resume writer to change my resume based on the job description. I have tried that but still feel stuck, but Iāll continue to persevere, I always do š
I agree with Microsoft guy/girl. LinkedIn is the way. Get a professional headshot up there. Don't need to actually pay for one, you can have someone with a good phone take one of you. Change your banner to something inviting and that points to your experience with a good call out. Something like "people first" or whatever describes your skill best. Change your header with the same concept. Once you've done these things add people who work in that industry. Add them all. Start posting related things to get impressions on LinkedIn. Communicate with your connections. Not in an I need a job type of way, but I'd like to break into this industry. How can I best do that ? Etc. Build relationships with these people. When you start applying to these jobs you'll have connections, relationships and referrals pre built. You'll slide right in but you have to do the work. LinkedIn has a weird social politics thing and I don't reccomend this process to everyone but because I was in the SAME exact situation as you, I know that our path is a little different. The jobs that we go for have to do with people engagement and need interpersonal skills so you need to be able to demonstrate that somewhere. Your resume will only tell them that you have x years of engagement. Your LinkedIn in will tell them all that you wish you could. Best of luck girlie. You got this!
Would you be interested in corporate sales? Your retail sales experience should be directly transferable. Try going for roles such as client service or relationship manager. They might give you a chance.
Definitely open to it, but my dream role would be to get into People Ops, Iād love to work in roles focusing on employee experience. I know first hand the impact employee experience can have.
My opinion is that people ops will be very hard to find right now. How about targeting a CSM role in the sales work
But congrats to you for looking upwards, I think itās a wonderful long-term goal for you to be in people ops and probably belong there.
