I am starting to think Chinese interviewers currently fail non-Chinese candidates on purpose.
I can understand the appeal of embedded software for those with an EE background. But for SWEs with a CS background is embedded software engineering a career dead end? TC 450k Yoe 15 #qualcomm #intel #amd #google #meta #amazon #apple
Few computer engineers will even touch embedded these days, such as myself; we just go for regular, better paying, software jobs. Gotta leave embedded work to the EEs who don't know data structures and algorithms because if they did they'd also leave embedded and double their salaries
xD. Embedded engineers who know data structures make good money, especially since they can optimize on lower levels.
Computer engineering is different than computer science
The shit is hard to debug, it’s not a dead end. Rather people are too lazy to spend more time debugging a thing rather than do development.
this
As a long time 20+ yoe embedded engineer I’m still getting a bunch of recruiters contacting me. Embedded is more relevant than ever with the proliferation of companies doing SoCs and every nearly every product having some sort of computing. There’s no real cap, there’s plenty of embedded principal/fellow level. Obviously at that level you’re deep in adjacents but embedded engineers are the best for understanding HW/SW interactions and tradeoffs.
Is embedded TC at google comparable to backend SWEs?
Yeah were on the same TC schedule from what I can tell.
Dude I want to break into embedded. How? I had a few projects but they are definitely hobbyist stuffs only.
I definitely see the crazy demand for embedded sw right now, even while other types of software engineers are going through lay offs
At what TC are they hiring? And is knowing C enough?
Will embedded sw and robotics get stronger as AI start taking the jobs of "higher level" programmers?
Possible. Equally possible though is the fact that AI might take up embedded jobs.
I find this crazy because in order to AI create/develop/model something, you need to have clear requirements. And, in today's industry, the requirements are not clear and won't be easy to integrate. It may take another 10 years to standardize the requirements industry. Plus, what about testing and manual testing? Yeah, there are mechanical robots out there but they are super expensive. So, at least 20 more years for EE and CS.
There are plenty of zero code or low code tools available for web development. I haven't seen anything like that in the embedded space. Even trivial tasks such writing kernel drivers, designing real time processes and IPC, and hardware bring up seem to be a much harder problem for AI to solve.
Sure. Embedded is better than web dev. But compared to backend/ infra?
Whatever you find more enjoyable is better. Both are just fine for career advancement.
You are seeing Embedded and Web under one umbrella of coding and salary. If you try both, you will suck at both and be mediocre and never reach the top of the TC band. Do something that interests you. You will get that TC if you deserve it.
There’s definitely a cap on career growth. I wouldn’t call it a dead end career, you can make a great living being at a terminal level.
Nice viewpoint
