How bad is it in meta?
Everywhere I screen, I am asked about my employment status - (FAANG/non-FAANG which traditionally hire H1_Bs). I understand that it is important for HR to know if H1-B processing is required. But one recruiter from a non-FAANG company openly said that they preferred citizens/green card as the future is uncertain for H1-B. That got me thinking - do you think this factor is weighing in in the company's hiring decisions in the present tech market?
Faang + Microsoft doesn’t care and will not care (especially for high demand low supply roles). Fuck the haters - the reality is talent matters at FAANG
Isn't it illegal to discriminate against people based on what particular employment authorization they have?
No, H1B can only be given when a permanent resident or a citizen can't be hired for the role. They even have to do paperwork to prove that. However, since the supply demand gap is so big in Tech, especially for roles like software engineering and data science, this has never been an issue in this industry.
No and it shouldn't be
It’s always been a factor. You’d be living under a stone if you don’t know it.
Been a factor since begin of time, not just 2015. Just not advertised
It’s been a factor since 2015
