Is going to US for MS (Masters) worth it in 2023?

Hey, I got admit in Georgia Tech for MSCS and I can complete it in 1.5 yrs, by 2024 end. But given the current financial marke conditions in US and the IT sector layoffs, I'm really wondering if it's worth taking the risk or not to go to US. Obviously I want to take up job there after MS on H1B visa(wanna return after 2 years job), but I'm worried if there'll be any hirings by that time if the current job pandemic continues by 2024? My friend who is currently doing MS there said they are finding difficulty in getting even the internships, let aside job offers, which are rare anyway. What are your opinions guys? Is it worth taking risk or not? Or Shall I improve on my skills and switch with better job options in India itself? Don't wanna go there and come back without job after completing MS because OPT expired. Please share your views if you currently in US and what are the prospects of getting job by next year as per the current situation in US. Can anyone currently in US on H1B visa elaborate on the situation? Are there any signals for improvement by next year? TC: 20L (24K) YOE: 3 #engineering #software #career #MSCS #masters

The fact that your friends are saying that it’s hard to get internship let alone jobs is quite a stupid remark and should tell you that they don’t know anything about job market. Getting an internship is always much more difficult than job in software engineering.

Okay, but he also said that none of their batchmates are getting job offers either. Their program is about to end in one month, so they all are planning to extend the program by taking extra credits in next session.

Yeahh situation is difficult but getting internship and offers are mostly independent.age of easy money is gone but that doesn’t mean that no one is getting job.Things are hard and many people are competing for less jobs but still no way comparison to India. Plus economic outlook will change by the time you graduate

Getting H1B is very hard let alone jobs. What would you do, you spend all money in US and you have to leave the country because of H1B issues ?

I'd recommend staying in India. Too many hassles with the GC process and getting stuck in the backlog. Not worth the trouble when India is so much more lucrative with better purchasing power for Software Engineer salaries.

I don't want to stay there, no worries for GC as such. Just wanna experience the culture and wanna enter into the FAANG and return back after 2 years.

It's like gambling

Johnson Controls mundaKamal OP Mar 22, 2023

Can you please elaborate a little more? Gambling based on what? Current market situation or something else?

Oracle NmYt60 Mar 22, 2023

Getting a H1B visa is itself a gambling. You will be randomly selected what if you didn't get H1B visa ?

you are praising univerisites on every thread without justifying. OP just mentioned that only 10-20% of GaTech students found employment so far this cycle. please share your rationale.

ah, sorry that stat was from another post, but my point stands.

Absolutely not

Can you please explain your reason?

If you belong to a middle class family then don't even think of it. Only go to US if you come from a super rich family where 1-2 crore rs is peanut 🥜

I would say go for a 2-2.5 yr thesis based masters and graduate in 2026. Things are bound to get better by then. Better yet, I think you have to option to delay admission by 1 year citing personal reasons. Talk to you advisor about it. You can then enrol in Fall 2024 and graduate in 2027 (assuming a 2.5 yr thesis based masters.) If you manage to get a job before that, you can always revert to a course based masters and graduate early. I am currently enrolled in Georgia Tech MS CS. People are getting internship offers for the summer but full time new grad offers are scant even for people with 3+ yoe. Out of 20 people I know who are graduating by the end of this semester, only 3 have found jobs so far.

So graduating in May? But internships are harder to get than FT jobs right?

MathWorks kaiczar Mar 22, 2023

No internships are easier to get than Full time jobs both in general and also right now. I’m graduating in Dec or next May depending on the situation.
